Jaw Pain

How Chinese medicine differentiates jaw pain — distinct from Jaw Stiffness, TMJ Disorder and Toothache already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Jaw pain with chest pain, arm pain, or shortness of breath needs immediate medical evaluation (a cardiac cause must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for jaw pain — 13 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain like a needle, worsens with stress and clenching, irritability and emotional tension.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, restore smooth Qi flow.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established stasis-spot-tongue marker.

2. Wind Invading the Channels

Clinical manifestations: Pain shifts location around the jaw/face, stiffness and limited opening, symptoms worsen with wind/drafts/cold, mild chills, acute onset after exposure.
Tongue: Normal light red body with thin white coat. Pulse: Floating and possibly tight.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind-Cold, release the exterior, unblock the channels.
Note: no moxa. This site has no organ-nonspecific facial Wind-invasion slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Painful Obstruction Due to Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Swollen, hot jaw joint, heavy aching sensation, limited opening with stiffness, thirst, irritability and restlessness, pain relieved by cold.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen, yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the channels, reduce swelling and obstruction.
Note: no moxa. This is a joint-localized Damp-Heat Bi-syndrome with no organ marker, the same joint-localized gap noted for Sinew Contracture and Upper Back Pain in batch 41 — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull, aching, tired jaw pain, worsens with fatigue/overuse/eating, pale lips and complexion, general weakness and dizziness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and nourish Blood to strengthen jaw muscles and joints.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This is the generic Qi-and-Blood-deficiency picture, already confirmed absent as a standalone slide on this site many times over — no pattern link is given; points still link fine individually.

5. Liver-Blood and Kidney-Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching jaw pain, worsens with fatigue/overuse, lower back soreness and weak knees, dizziness and blurred vision, loose teeth, tinnitus, scanty menstruation.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with possible fine cracks, thin or scanty coating. Pulse: Deep, fine, weak.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Essence and Liver-Blood to strengthen bones and sinews.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Linked to this site's Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide — the source names \"Liver Blood\" and \"Kidney Essence\" rather than \"Liver/Kidney Yin,\" but the dizziness/tinnitus/lower-back/scanty-menses presentation matches closely enough to link with this naming nuance flagged, the same convention used for Clavicle Pain in batch 39.

6. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching jaw pain, worsens after eating/fatigue, poor appetite and bloating, loose or poorly formed stools, fatigue and weak limbs, sallow or pale complexion.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tooth-marked body with thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen and Stomach Qi to rebuild nourishment and resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.
