Laryngopharyngeal Reflux

How Chinese medicine differentiates laryngopharyngeal reflux — distinct from GERD and Acid Reflux already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Reflux with difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, or a persistent hoarse voice needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for laryngopharyngeal reflux — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang, moves Liver-Qi and Blood.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood, tonifies Stomach and Spleen.
P-6Invigorates Qi and Blood in the chest, calms the mind.
REN-12Tonifies Stomach, strengthens Spleen, regulates Qi.
ST-40Resolves Dampness and Phlegm, key point to clear throat obstruction.
REN-22Descends Lung-Qi, benefits throat and voice.
BL-20Back-Shu point of Spleen, strengthens transformation of food and fluids.
BL-21Back-Shu point of Stomach, supports the Stomach's descending function.
SP-10Cools Blood, invigorates Blood and removes stagnation.
BL-17Influential point of Blood, resolves stasis and harmonizes Blood.
SP-6Tonifies Spleen and Stomach, nourishes Yin, moistens dryness.
KI-3Source point of Kidney, deeply nourishes Yin, anchors fluids.
The Six Patterns

1. Liver Qi Stagnation Invading the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending pain in the ribs or upper abdomen, frequent belching or acid reflux, sensation of a lump in the throat, symptoms worsen with emotional stress, irritability and mood swings.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red body with possibly redder sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, especially at left middle position.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver-Qi, regulate Qi, harmonize the Stomach, relieve the core reflux mechanism.
Note: no moxa. This site names the same mechanism 'Rebellious Liver-Qi invading the Stomach' — its content (sour regurgitation, belching, nausea, epigastric distension, Wiry pulse) matches this pattern almost word for word, so it is linked here despite the slightly different title.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning throat pain or heartburn, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability and mood swings, red face and eyes, frequent belching or acid reflux, distending pain in the ribs or upper abdomen.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver-Qi, clear Heat, descend rebellious Stomach-Qi, stop reflux.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

3. Qi-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Sensation of a lump in the throat, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, irritability and mood swings, symptoms worsen with emotional stress.
Tongue: Normal-coloured body, possibly slightly swollen, with white greasy or slippery coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Move Qi, dissipate nodules, descend Qi, resolve Phlegm, relieve throat obstruction.
Note: no moxa. This is the classic Plum-Pit-Qi (Mei He Qi) presentation; no deck on this site has a dedicated Qi-Phlegm-of-the-throat slide, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Reflux of clear watery acid, fatigue and physical weakness, bloating after small meals, poor appetite, loose unformed stools, pale sallow complexion, dull mild upper stomach discomfort.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft, lacking force, especially at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen and Stomach Qi, descend rebellious Stomach-Qi, reduce the upward surge of acid into the throat.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

5. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain in the chest or throat, distending pain in the ribs or upper abdomen, irritability and mood swings.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, move Qi, relieve pain, open the chest, disperse stagnation, restore downward Qi flow.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a dark purple tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.

6. Stomach-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning throat pain or heartburn, dry mouth and throat worse at night, hunger but no desire to eat, dull burning pain in the upper abdomen, dry stools or constipation.
Tongue: Red, thin body with a dry centre, little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Lung and Stomach Yin, clear deficiency Heat, descend Qi, ease throat irritation.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-Yin-deficiency slide.
