Lip Sores

How Chinese medicine differentiates lip sores into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Canker Sores and Painful Gums pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Lip sores that are large, persistent beyond three weeks, spreading rapidly, or accompanied by fever need medical assessment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for lip sores — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior. Promotes the diffusing of Lung-Qi, regulates the Defensive Qi and sweating. Stops pain.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
