Loose Teeth

How Chinese medicine differentiates loose teeth — distinct from Periodontal Disease and Toothache already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Loose teeth with gum swelling, pus, or recent trauma need dental evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for loose teeth — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Kidney-Essence Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Loose teeth or dental fragility, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, premature graying or hair loss, poor memory and difficulty concentrating, dizziness or tinnitus.
Tongue: Pale, slightly thin body with little or no coating, fine cracks may appear. Pulse: Fine and deep, especially weak at both Chi positions.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Essence and strengthen bones, replenishing marrow and foundational reserves.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Essence-deficiency slide.

2. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry eyes with blurred or cloudy vision, night sweats and five-centre heat, dizziness or tinnitus, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, insomnia or restless sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid and often wiry, left Chi weak.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, replenish deep fluids that moisten and anchor bones and sinews, clear Empty-Heat rising to the gums.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

3. Kidney-Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry mouth and throat, night sweats, five-centre heat in the palms soles and chest, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees.
Tongue: Red, thin and dry with little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin and moisturize dryness, calming the upward flaring of Empty-Heat that destabilizes the dental roots.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide.

4. Kidney-Qi Not Firm View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Frequent clear urination especially at night, dribbling after urination or incontinence, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, loose teeth without gum redness or swelling.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, moist body with thin white coat and possible tooth marks. Pulse: Deep, weak and fine, especially at both rear positions.
Treatment principle: Reinforce Kidney-Qi and its anchoring capacity, restoring holding power to secure the teeth and prevent leakage throughout the body.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct match — this site's Kidney-Qi-not-Firm slide is the same underlying pattern used elsewhere on this site for weak/dribbling urine; here it manifests instead as loose, non-inflamed teeth.

5. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Aching cold in the lower back and knees, frequent clear urination especially at night, feeling cold all over worse in the lower body, fatigue and low spirits, loose stools or early morning diarrhea.
Tongue: Pale, puffy and tender with teeth marks, wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, especially at rear positions.
Treatment principle: Warm and strengthen Kidney-Yang, reigniting the body's foundational fire to secure bones and teeth.
Note: moxibustion strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.
