Moving Pain (Migratory Pain)

How Chinese medicine differentiates pain that migrates from place to place — distinct from Muscle Tension, Sinew Pain and Rheumatoid Arthritis already covered — the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Migrating joint pain with fever, rash, or swelling needs medical evaluation (an autoimmune or infectious cause should be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.

The Three Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Wind-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Pain that moves from joint to joint, heaviness and soreness in the limbs, morning joint stiffness, symptoms worsen with wind and damp weather, mild swelling around affected joints.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale body with white greasy coating, sometimes slightly swollen. Pulse: Floating, soggy, or slippery.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind, eliminate Dampness, unblock the channels.
Note: no moxa. This site has no organ-nonspecific Wind-Damp slide, the same gap noted for Head Lice in this same batch — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending, bloating pain that moves around, worsens with stress/frustration/anger, frequent sighing, irritability and mood swings, feeling of a lump in the throat.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dusky body with thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Spread Liver-Qi to relieve distension and emotional tightness, move Qi and Blood to stop wandering pain.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide via the stress-triggered, sighing, distending-pain symptom set.

3. Blood Deficiency With External Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Shifting dull ache in joints or muscles, pale complexion and dizziness, worsens at night and with wind exposure, numbness or tingling in the limbs, dry skin and brittle nails.
Tongue: Pale, thin body, thin white slightly dry coat. Pulse: Fine/thready, wiry at the left Guan position, floating at the right Cun position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood, dispel Wind, alleviate wandering pain.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency-generating-Wind slide, the same slide also used for Sinew Contracture and Scabies in this batch.
