Oily Skin

How Chinese medicine differentiates oily skin into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Acne, Seborrheic Dermatitis and Oily Sweat pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden change in skin oiliness with other symptoms (irregular periods, excess hair, weight change) can reflect a hormonal cause worth checking with a doctor.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for oily skin — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.

1. Damp-Heat in the Stomach and Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Persistent greasy shine; bloating after eating; sticky or bitter taste; loose, incomplete stools; heavy, foggy head.
Tongue: Red, possibly swollen and tooth-marked, thick yellow greasy coat at the centre and back. Pulse: Soggy, rapid and slippery; strongest at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat, drains Dampness and restores Spleen-Stomach transformation.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Stomach slide.

2. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Thick, waxy oil; dull sallow complexion; poor appetite with sticky taste and no thirst; heavy limbs and head; brain fog.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with scalloped edges, thick white greasy coat. Pulse: Slippery — like beads rolling through oil.
Treatment principle: Dries Dampness and transforms Phlegm; strengthens the Spleen to prevent its formation.
Note: Mixed Deficiency/Excess. This site's decks have no Phlegm-Dampness slide for this presentation — no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Red, flushed, oily face; bitter taste; intense irritability and short temper; throbbing temple headaches.
Tongue: Red with redder sides, dry yellow coat. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Drains Liver-Gall Bladder Fire and clears the upward-flaring Heat.
Note: no moxa.

4. Empty-Heat from Yin Deficiency View full pattern →
