Perioral Dermatitis

How Chinese medicine differentiates perioral dermatitis (a rash around the mouth) — distinct from Acne, Rosacea and Contact Dermatitis already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. This condition is often worsened by topical steroids, so any current steroid cream use should be discussed with a dermatologist rather than stopped abruptly on its own.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for perioral dermatitis — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Greasy red papules and pustules around the mouth, yellow oily exudate or crusting, sticky or bitter taste, abdominal bloating, loose stools feeling incomplete or sticky.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at the center and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat from Spleen and Stomach, resolve Dampness, cool Blood.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide — the source names this pattern \"Stomach and Spleen\" combined, while this site's deck carries a Spleen-specific slide, the same naming-nuance flag used for Myasthenia Gravis in batch 40.

2. Wind-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Sudden red papules and tiny blisters, intense itching, mild fever or chills, sore throat.
Tongue: Red tip and edges, thin yellow or thin white-to-yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind and stop itching, clear Heat, drain Dampness.
Note: no moxa. This is an exterior Wind-Heat skin eruption, not a respiratory invasion — this site has no skin-specific Wind-Heat slide, so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Stomach Fire (Stomach Heat) View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry red papules or pustules around the mouth, bad breath, excessive hunger, thirst craving cold drinks, constipation with dry hard stools, burning sensation in the stomach.
Tongue: Red body, often with red prickles in the center, thick dry yellow coat. Pulse: Rapid, slippery, and full, especially strong at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Clear Stomach-Heat rising along the mouth channel, cool the Blood.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-Heat slide.

4. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark red, dry patches and fine scaling, rash worsens afternoon/evening, night sweats, heat in palms/soles/chest, dry mouth and throat wanting sips of water, irritability and sleep trouble.
Tongue: Red, thin, and dry with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, rebuild the body's cooling and moistening resources.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. The source does not name Kidney explicitly, but the KI-3/SP-6 point choice and the night-sweats/five-center-heat presentation match this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency slide closely enough to link with this nuance flagged.
