Restless Leg Syndrome

How Chinese medicine differentiates restless leg syndrome, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Restless leg syndrome can have underlying medical causes (iron deficiency, kidney disease, medication side effects) that need ruling out; acupuncture is a complementary, not a replacement, approach.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for restless leg syndrome — 11 key points, used across most of the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (Yin and Yang), strengthens Essence.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen, resolves Dampness, nourishes Blood and Yin.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang, promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi, invigorates Blood.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen, tonifies Qi and Blood.
SP-10Cools Blood, invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
BL-20Tonifies Spleen and Stomach, resolves Dampness, nourishes Blood.
G.B.-34Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi. Benefits the sinews. Removes obstruction from the channel.
BL-17Invigorates and cools Blood, tonifies Qi and Blood, benefits the sinews.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen, resolves Dampness, opens the Water passages.

The Six Patterns

reinforcing   reducing   even method — technique below follows standard Excess/Deficiency treatment principle for each pattern, not tied to a specific point-by-point source. None of this condition's six patterns has a genuine match in the site's pattern decks (checked pattern-by-pattern below) — this is expected, consistent with the site's established gaps around limb/joint-specific presentations.

1. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: A deep, aching restlessness in the legs that is worse at night and brings an urge to move them; night sweats; dry eyes; a hot sensation in the palms and soles; soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees; brought on by ageing, chronic overwork, or long-term illness consuming Kidney and Liver Yin; eased by rest, cooling foods, and a calm evening routine.
Tongue: Red, thin, cracked, little coating, dry. Pulse: Fine, Rapid, Wiry, weak at the left Chi position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Liver Yin, clear deficiency Heat, calm internal Wind affecting the sinews.
Note: no moxa. The closest deck slide, "Kidney- and Liver-Yin deficiency," is driven by hearing/eye/reproductive symptoms without the Empty-Heat signature (red-cracked tongue, five-palm heat) this pattern needs, and neither it nor the Kidney-only Empty-Heat slide mentions legs — so no pattern link is given here.

2. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Aching, heavy, or numb legs that feel better with gentle movement; fatigue and general weakness; a pale complexion and pale lips; dizziness or light-headedness; poor appetite; heart palpitations; brought on by chronic illness, blood loss, or long-term overwork depleting Qi and Blood; eased by rest, nourishing food, and gentle activity.
Tongue: Pale, possible tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, Weak, especially at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, rebuild nourishment to the legs and support circulation.
Tonify Qi and Blood
Local circulation
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. No deck slide anywhere on this site combines Qi and Blood deficiency into one generic pattern — a gap confirmed across many prior conditions — so no pattern link is given here.

3. Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain in the legs that is worse at night and with rest; brought on by long-standing untreated stagnation, injury, or chronic Qi stagnation congealing the Blood; eased by gentle movement and warmth.
Tongue: Dark purple, stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coating. Pulse: Choppy, possibly Wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, unblock the channels to relieve fixed pain.
Note: no moxa. The site's "Liver-Blood stasis" slide is dominated by hypochondrial pain and a gynecological presentation (clotted periods, uterine masses) with no leg-pain content, so it isn't a close enough match to link here.

4. Damp-Heat in the Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: A burning or itching sensation in the legs; a heavy feeling through the lower body; thirst with little desire to drink; dark, scanty, or cloudy urine; brought on by a diet heavy in greasy, spicy, or sweet food, damp weather, or chronic Liver-Qi stagnation transforming into Heat; eased by cooling foods and a drier environment.
Tongue: Red with a yellow greasy coating, thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery, Rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness from the lower burner, strengthen the Spleen to prevent further accumulation.
Note: no moxa. This site's Damp-Heat slides (Liver, Gall Bladder, Bladder) are all genitourinary-focused and none carries the hallmark leg-skin burning/itching this pattern is built around, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Painful Obstruction with Wind-Cold-Damp

Clinical manifestations: Aching, sore pain in the legs; heaviness or numbness in the limbs; symptoms that worsen in cold or damp weather and ease with warmth and gentle movement; stiffness and limited movement; an aversion to cold or wind; brought on by exposure to cold and damp environments, or a weakened constitution allowing external pathogens to lodge in the channels; eased by warmth, movement, and protection from the elements.
Tongue: Pale, slightly swollen, tooth-marked, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and tight, or Soggy and Slow if Dampness predominates.
Treatment principle: Expel Wind-Cold-Damp, invigorate Blood, tonify Qi to restore free flow through the channels.
Expel Wind-Cold-Damp, invigorate Blood
Tonify Qi, resolve Dampness
Note: moxa applicable on the Expel points. No deck anywhere on this site has a dedicated Painful Obstruction/Bi-syndrome limb-pain category — a gap confirmed across many prior conditions — so no pattern link is given here.

6. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: A heavy, distended sensation in the legs; a feeling of swelling without redness or heat; poor appetite and chest stuffiness; brain fog and fatigue; brought on by a diet heavy in greasy or sweet food, a sedentary lifestyle, or chronic Spleen weakness feeding Phlegm production; eased by warm, plainly-cooked food and staying active.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, tooth-marked, thick white greasy coating, wet surface. Pulse: Slippery or Soggy.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, strengthen the Spleen to clear obstruction from the legs.
Transform Phlegm-Dampness
Support Spleen
Note: moxa applicable on the Transform-Phlegm points. No standalone (non-uterus-specific) Damp-Phlegm slide exists in this site's Spleen or Stomach decks — a gap confirmed across many prior conditions — so no pattern link is given here.
