Scabies

How Chinese medicine differentiates scabies — distinct from Itchy Skin, Skin Rashes and Contact Dermatitis already covered — the three patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, used as supportive care alongside proper medical treatment of the mite infestation, never as a substitute for it.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Scabies is a contagious mite infestation that needs a topical or oral scabicide to actually clear the mites (household contacts often need treating too); acupuncture here is supportive for lingering itch only, alongside that treatment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for scabies-related itching — 5 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-14Clears Wind-Heat, releases the exterior.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools the Blood.
SP-10Cools the Blood and stops itching.
SP-6Regulates the Spleen, resolves Dampness. Nourishes Blood and Yin.
ST-36Strengthens the Spleen to produce Blood and Qi.
The Three Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Wind-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Intense itching worsening at night and with heat, red papules or tiny blisters in skin folds, between fingers, wrists, skin feels hot with prominent scratch marks and blood spots, possible mild fever or chills at onset, thirst desiring cool beverages.
Tongue: Red tip and edges with thin yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Dispel Wind and stop itching, clear Heat, drain Dampness.
Note: no moxa. This is an exterior Wind-Heat skin eruption, not a respiratory invasion — this site has no skin-specific Wind-Heat slide, so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Oozing, crusting lesions after scratching, heavy sluggish body sensation, sticky bitter taste, loose sticky stools, itching worse in warm humid weather.
Tongue: Red body with thick yellow greasy coating, difficult to scrape. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide via the bitter-taste and loose-sticky-stool markers — the deck's own presentation is rib-focused rather than skin-focused, so this is a paraphrase link flagged for that difference.

3. Blood Deficiency With External Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, scaly, flaking skin lesions, intense itching worsening at night, pale or sallow complexion, aversion to wind or drafts, dizziness or light-headedness, brittle nails and dry rough hair.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white and slightly dry coating. Pulse: Fine, wiry at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten Dryness, dispel Wind and stop itching.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Matched to this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency-generating-Wind slide via the dizziness/pale-complexion/dryness symptom set.
