Seizures

How Chinese medicine differentiates seizures — distinct from the localized Muscle Spasm already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Seizure disorders always need a full medical and neurological work-up and ongoing management (anti-epileptic medication where indicated); acupuncture is supportive alongside that care, never a substitute for it, and is never appropriate as a response to an active convulsion outside emergency medical supervision.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for seizures — 9 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
DU-20Expels interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang. Raises Yang. Benefits the Brain and sense organs.
ST-40Resolves Phlegm and Dampness. Calms the Mind and opens the Mind's orifices.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind. Calms spasms.
DU-26Promotes resuscitation and extinguishes interior Wind. Calms the Mind and opens the Mind's orifices.
HE-7Calms the Mind and opens the Mind's orifices. Nourishes Heart-Blood.
P-6Opens the chest and moves Qi and Blood. Calms the Mind.
REN-12Tonifies Stomach and Spleen. Resolves Dampness and Phlegm. Calms the Mind.
G.B.-20Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang. Clears Heat. Nourishes Marrow and clears the Brain.
KI-1Nourishes Yin and clears Empty-Heat. Extinguishes interior Wind. Calms the Mind. Restores consciousness.
The Four Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Wind-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Foaming at the mouth, gurgling throat sound during the seizure, dizziness or a heavy head before the attack, white frothy sputum, chest stuffiness with nausea, numbness or tingling of the limbs.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale body, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Transform Wind-Phlegm and stop spasms, open the orifices and revive consciousness, calm the Spirit.
Note: no moxa. This site has no standalone Wind-Phlegm slide anywhere in its decks — a new confirmed-absent category — so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

2. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Flushed red face and red eyes, mental restlessness and agitation, copious thick yellow sticky phlegm, bitter taste and thirst, violent seizures with loud shouting or screaming.
Tongue: Red body with swollen prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, forceful.
Treatment principle: Drain Liver and Gall Bladder Fire, purge Heat and unblock the bowels, clear Heat from the internal organs.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Heart slide — the red face, bitter taste, agitation and violent/shouting behaviour line up almost verbatim.

3. Phlegm Misting the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mental confusion or dullness, rattling or gurgling throat sound, thick white greasy tongue coating, blank staring expression, chest stuffiness and oppression.
Tongue: Pale and swollen body with thick white greasy coating, possibly stiff. Pulse: Slippery, moderate to good strength.
Treatment principle: Scour Phlegm and open the orifices, clear Heat and transform Phlegm, regulate Qi and resolve turbidity.
Note: moxa on REN-12 only. Direct match with this site's own Phlegm-misting-the-Mind slide — the blank staring expression and rattling throat sound match that slide's dull-eyes/gurgling-throat presentation, the same equivalence used for Delayed Speech Development and COPD.

4. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver-Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Severe dizziness or vertigo before/between seizures, throbbing or distending headache, hand tremor or muscle twitching, irritability and easy anger, flushed face and red eyes.
Tongue: Red body, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry, fine, possibly rapid, forceful at cun and guan positions.
Treatment principle: Calm the Liver and extinguish Wind, subdue Liver-Yang, clear Heat and drain Fire.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Liver-Fire-generating-Wind slide rather than plain Liver-Yang rising or the Yin/Blood-deficiency Wind subpatterns — the tremor plus irritability plus flushed face/red eyes plus Red tongue with yellow coating is that slide's own exact diagnostic tip, the same rule already used for Muscle Spasm and Hand Tremor.
