Slurred Speech

How Chinese medicine differentiates slurred or stiff speech into the 6 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Hemiplegia and Muscle Spasm pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

Sudden slurred speech is a medical emergency (a possible stroke) — call emergency services immediately. Acupuncture has a role only in supervised rehabilitation afterward, never in the acute event.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for slurred speech — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
G.B.-20Expels exterior Wind. Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang.
LIV-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
REN-23Benefits the tongue and speech. Subdues rebellious Qi.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Wind-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Dizziness or spinning vertigo, copious white frothy sputum, a heavy distending headache, numbness or tingling in the limbs, stiffness or deviation of the tongue with slurred speech.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Transform Wind-Phlegm and stop spasms, strengthen the Spleen and resolve Dampness, calm the Liver.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Paralysis and Hemiplegia pages leave the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.

2. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Slurred speech with tongue stiffness or deviation, severe dizziness or vertigo, a hand or head tremor, irritability and easy anger, a flushed face and red eyes, a stiff neck and throbbing headache.
Tongue: Red, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry, fine, often rapid.
Treatment principle: Calm the Liver and extinguish Wind, subdue floating Yang, nourish Yin to anchor it.

3. Phlegm-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Phlegm stuck in the throat, chest oppression and fullness, constipation, restlessness and irritability, slurred or muddled speech.
Tongue: Red and swollen with a thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and transform Phlegm, clear Liver and Gallbladder heat, harmonize the Stomach.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this generic, non-organ-specific Phlegm-Heat category has no matching deck slide on this site.

4. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fatigue and lack of strength, fixed stabbing pain that worsens with pressure, a dark dusky complexion, numbness or tingling in the limbs, shortness of breath with reluctance to speak.
Tongue: Pale-dark or pale-purple with possible stasis spots, teeth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine or weak, choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, unblock the channels and collaterals.
Note: Confirmed absent again: no deck on this site names a Qi-Deficiency-causing-Blood-Stagnation category on its own.

5. Empty-Wind Agitating in the Interior

Clinical manifestations: Trembling or twitching of the tongue and limbs, severe fatigue and listlessness, night sweats, malar flush, a low-grade fever, dizziness and dry eyes.
Tongue: Crimson, thin, dry, cracked, little or no coating, may tremble. Pulse: Fine, rapid, often wiry at the left Guan, lacking force on deep palpation.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and extinguish Wind, subdue floating Yang, nourish Blood and generate essence.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Muscle Spasm page leaves the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.

6. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver Fire

Clinical manifestations: Suddenly slurred or stiff speech, a red face and red eyes, extreme irritability and agitation, a bitter taste, a splitting headache or severe dizziness, tremors or muscle twitching.
Tongue: Red with redder sides, stiff or trembling, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Wiry, rapid, forceful, especially at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Cool the Liver and extinguish Wind, soften and relax the sinews, settle fright.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's liver deck slides for Liver-Wind already carry the Yang-Rising and Blood-Deficiency variants — no slide names a Liver-Fire-driven Wind variant.
