Sunburn

How Chinese medicine differentiates sunburn, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Large blisters, fever, chills, or signs of heat exhaustion alongside sunburn need medical evaluation before acupuncture is considered.

The Five Patterns

1. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Intense redness and swelling, burning skin pain, blisters filled with clear or yellowish fluid, high fever, severe thirst for cold drinks, dark scanty urine, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red body with prickly thorns and dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, often full or overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear heat, drain fire, resolve toxin.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Toxic-Heat slide exists on this site, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Burning skin pain, redness deepening in evening, restlessness and irritability, intense thirst for cold drinks, sensation of internal furnace-like heat.
Tongue: Red body with red spots or prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, often wiry and forceful.
Treatment principle: Cool the Blood, address heat that has penetrated to the Blood level.
Note: no moxa. No standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide exists on this site, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Weeping or oozing blisters with yellow crusts, body heaviness, sticky mouth sensation, red swollen skin with exudate rather than dry peeling, poor appetite, nausea, loose sticky stools.
Tongue: Red body with thick, yellow, greasy coating, difficult to scrape. Pulse: Slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Cool and dry to resolve the combination of internal Dampness with external Fire toxin.
Note: no moxa. Sunburn isn't confined to the lower body/genital area the way this site's Damp-Heat pattern decks are framed, so no pattern link is forced here.

4. Empty-Heat from Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry red skin with lingering burning sensation, worsening in evening or night, night sweats, dry mouth and throat with thirst for small sips, restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks and little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, clear empty heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-Yin/Empty-Heat slide.

5. Blood Stagnation with Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Purplish-red skin patches or bruising, fixed stabbing pain worse at night, internal heat sensation especially at night, thirst with desire to rinse mouth but not swallow.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, thin dry yellow coat. Pulse: Choppy and rapid.
Treatment principle: Cool and invigorate Blood, reduce stasis and heat.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — purplish-red discoloration and a stasis-spot tongue are the same core markers named there, with Heat added on top.
