Undigested Food in Stools

How Chinese medicine differentiates undigested food appearing in the stool — distinct from Diarrhea and Chronic Dysentery already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent undigested food in the stool with weight loss needs medical evaluation (malabsorption and pancreatic causes must be ruled out) before assuming a simple pattern.

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Spleen-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Loose stools with undigested food, bloating after eating, poor appetite, fatigue, pale complexion, no Cold symptoms.
Tongue: Pale, puffy tongue with tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, deficient at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and strengthen the Spleen's transforming function.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold abdominal pain relieved by warmth, loose watery stools with undigested food, cold extremities, poor appetite, tiredness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, scalloped edges, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak at the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang, dispel Cold, restore digestive fire.
Note: moxa central to this pattern (REN-12 and REN-8 both moxa'd). Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose stools with undigested food, body heaviness, greasy sensation in the mouth, bloating after eating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy, moist coating. Pulse: Soggy, slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi and drain Dampness simultaneously.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No Cold marker in this pattern's own presentation, so it is not forced onto the Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide, consistent with the established precedent. No pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Kidney and Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Early-morning diarrhea around 5am with undigested food, cold aching lower back and knees, cold extremities, chronic fatigue.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy with tooth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow, rear positions especially feeble.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang to support the Spleen's digestive fire.
Note: moxa central to this pattern (all points moxa'd). Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Spleen-Yang-deficiency slide — this one genuinely names Yang on both sides plus explicit Cold and early-morning-diarrhea markers.

5. Cold-Damp Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden-onset diarrhea with undigested food, cold abdominal pain relieved by warmth, body heaviness, nausea, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with tooth marks, excessive moist, thick white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy/slippery, slow.
Treatment principle: Dispel Cold-Damp obstruction, restore the Spleen's transforming ability.
Note: moxa central to this pattern (REN-12 and ST-25 both moxa'd). Matched to this site's own Cold-Dampness-invading-the-Spleen slide via the explicit Cold-plus-Damp presentation.

6. Rebellious Liver-Qi Invading the Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Diarrhea with undigested food triggered by stress or anger, abdominal pain easing after a bowel movement, rib distension, irritability, alternating constipation and loose stools.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale, possible tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry overall, distinctly wiry at the left middle position, softer at the right middle.
Treatment principle: Subdue Liver-Qi, strengthen the Spleen, resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi-invading-the-Spleen slide.
