Weak Urine Stream

How Chinese medicine differentiates a weak urine stream — distinct from Overactive Bladder and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A weak stream with complete inability to urinate needs urgent medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a weak urine stream — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
REN-4Warms Kidney-Yang and strengthens Bladder Qi transformation.
DU-4Directly tonifies the Gate of Life Fire.
BL-23Supplements Kidney-Yang and alleviates lower back coldness.
KI-3Source point, reinforces Kidney-Qi and supports fluid transformation.
SP-6Strengthens Spleen and Kidney, regulates the water passages.
ST-36Tonifies Spleen-Qi and raises clear Yang to support urinary expulsion.
REN-6Supplements original Qi, lifts sinking Qi from the lower burner.
DU-20Raises Qi from the top, helps lift the sinking that causes weak flow.
BL-13Tonifies Lung-Qi to improve breathing and overall Qi strength.
REN-3Front-Mu point of the Bladder, clears Heat and opens the water passages.
SP-9Master point for Dampness, drains Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
SP-10Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis.
L.I.-4Moves Qi strongly to relieve stagnation.
The Five Patterns

1. Kidney-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold, aching lower back and knees, feeling cold especially in the legs and feet, frequent nighttime urination, fatigue and low energy, dribbling after urination.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks and a wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow and weak, especially at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Warm Kidney-Yang and restore the Bladder's propulsive power, stoking the body's internal fire.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang-deficiency slide.

2. Kidney-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, fatigue and lack of stamina, frequent urination especially at night, shortness of breath on exertion, dribbling after urination, thin hesitant stream trailing off at the end.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy body with possible tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep, weak and fine, especially weak at the Chi positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney-Qi to restore the driving force that pushes urine out and secures Bladder control.
Note: moxa or warm needle applicable on REN-4. Direct match — this site's Kidney-Qi-not-Firm slide explicitly lists 'weak-stream urination' and 'dribbling after urination' among its named symptoms.

3. Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Shortness of breath worsened by exertion, poor appetite with abdominal bloating, fatigue and a weak low voice, loose stools, pale face without lustre, catching colds easily, hesitant weak stream lacking force from the start.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks, thin white slippery coating. Pulse: Weak and forceless, especially empty at right Cun and right Guan, weaker with pressure.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen and Lung Qi, lift sinking Qi to restore the upward and downward forces needed for Bladder function.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct match with this site's own Spleen-and-Lung-Qi-deficiency slide.

4. Damp-Heat in the Bladder View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Burning or stinging sensation during urination, dark yellow or cloudy urine, strong urge to urinate but only a weak hesitant stream, lower abdominal fullness or pressure, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body with a yellow greasy coating thickest at the root. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, may be wiry.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the Bladder, promote urination to flush out the pathogenic obstruction, open the water passages.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide.

5. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing fixed pain in the lower abdomen or perineum, feeling of blockage when urinating, pain worse with pressure or touch, dark purplish lips or complexion, weak hesitant sometimes interrupted flow as if something blocks the passage.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, warm the channels and move Qi, unblock the urinary passage and relieve pain.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a dark purple tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.
