Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

How Chinese medicine differentiates ADHD, the seven patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and using gentle pediatric technique where the patient is a child.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. ADHD is best managed alongside behavioral support and, where appropriate, medical/psychiatric care; acupuncture here is supportive care, not a substitute for that management.

Clinical manifestations: Mental fog with inner restlessness; a quick temper and impulsive outbursts; a feeling of phlegm in the throat or chest oppression; a red face with a bitter taste; disturbed sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Red body, swollen with a red prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, forceful and full.
Treatment principle: Clear Heart-Fire, transform Phlegm, calm the agitated Mind.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Phlegm-Fire harassing the Heart.

2. Liver Wind Agitating Internally due to Liver Yang Rising

Clinical manifestations: Constant fidgeting and squirming; irritability with an explosive temper; trembling hands or head; dizziness or an unsteady feeling; a stiff neck.
Tongue: Red body, stiff or trembling, possibly deviated, thin yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry and fine, may be rapid.
Treatment principle: Calm the Liver, extinguish Wind, anchor rising Yang.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Liver-Yang-rising-generating-Wind category distinct from Liver-Fire-generating-Wind, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A throbbing or distending headache at the temples or crown; irritability with a quick temper; a flushed face and red eyes; dizziness or heat rising to the head; difficulty sitting still.
Tongue: Red body with red sides, thin dry yellow or scanty coating. Pulse: Wiry, often fine and rapid at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Subdue rising Liver-Yang, clear Heat, calm the Mind.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Liver-Yang rising.

4. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Difficulty concentrating and forgetfulness; mental fatigue and lack of energy; poor appetite with bloating; a pale, sallow complexion; restless sleep with vivid dreams.
Tongue: Pale, tender body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Thin and weak, especially weak at the left Cun and right Guan positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify Heart-Blood and Spleen-Qi, nourish the Mind.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. Matches Spleen- and Heart-Blood deficiency — poor concentration/forgetfulness, restless dream-disturbed sleep and a pale complexion are shared.

6. Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Mental fog and forgetfulness; easily distracted with difficulty focusing; physical and mental fatigue, worse after meals; poor appetite and bloating; a pale face and lips; insomnia with excessive dreaming.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the left Cun and right Guan positions.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and Blood to nourish the Heart and anchor the Mind.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. This pattern is very close to pattern 5 above but this site's matching deck slide (Spleen- and Heart-Blood deficiency) is already linked there — to avoid double-linking the same slide twice on one page, no pattern link is given here.

7. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Forgetfulness and poor concentration; dry eyes with blurred vision; night sweats with heat in the palms and soles; soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees; dizziness and ringing in the ears.
