Aggression

How Chinese medicine differentiates aggressive, explosive or violent outbursts — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Aggression that is severe, sudden in onset, or puts anyone's safety at risk needs prompt medical and psychiatric evaluation; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, never a substitute for it.

1. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Throbbing headache at the temples/crown, red burning eyes, bitter taste, explosive rage outbursts, flushed red face, burning rib pain.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, dry yellow coating with possible red prickles. Pulse: Wiry, rapid, full and forceful at the left Guan position.
Treatment principle: Clear blazing Liver-Fire and drain Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gall Bladder.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Fire-blazing slide.

2. Rebellious Liver-Qi View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Explosive irritability triggered by sudden anger, belching or hiccups during outbursts, chest and rib distension and tightness, frequent sighing.
Tongue: Normal or slightly red sides with thin white coating. Pulse: Wiry, tight, forceful at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Smooth Liver-Qi flow and redirect upward rebellion downward.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Rebellious-Liver-Qi slide.

3. Liver-Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Explosive anger with chronic irritability, bitter taste, distending rib pain worsening with frustration, red face and bloodshot eyes, temple headache, dry mouth/throat.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release Liver-Qi stagnation and clear the resulting Heat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide — the same paraphrase-link convention used throughout this site.

4. Heart-Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Violent or manic aggressive outbursts, intense restlessness, flushed red face, palpitations with a racing sensation, mouth or tongue ulcers with red edges, insomnia with vivid disturbing dreams.
Tongue: Red body with a distinctly redder tip and swollen red points, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, overflowing, strongest at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Drain Fire and clear Heat with a focus on calming the Heart and Spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Fire-blazing slide.

5. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Manic, reckless, or confused aggression, copious thick yellow sticky phlegm, rattling or gurgling throat sounds, flushed red face and eyes, bitter taste with thirst, dizziness and head heaviness.
Tongue: Red body, swollen with a red prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, full and overflowing at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Clear Phlegm-Fire from the Heart and Gall Bladder, calm the Mind, resolve irritability.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Heart slide — the rattling throat, red face and \"tendency to hit or scold people\" language on that slide is a near-verbatim match for manic aggression.
