Astigmatism

How Chinese medicine differentiates astigmatism-related eye strain — distinct from Blurry Vision and Eye Fatigue already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care only. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Astigmatism is a refractive error corrected with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery; acupuncture here is supportive for associated eye strain and fatigue, never a substitute for proper optical correction or an eye exam.

1. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, gritty eyes with blurred vision, lower back and knee soreness, tinnitus, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest.
Tongue: Red with cracks, little coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, brighten the eyes, clear deficiency Heat.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

2. Heart-Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations, cold hands and feet, pale face, chest stuffiness, fatigue, dim vision lacking clarity.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak.
Treatment principle: Warm Heart-Yang, calm the Spirit, send clear Yang upward to nourish the eyes.
Note: moxa applicable on BL-15. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Yang-deficiency slide.

3. Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Blurred vision worsening with fatigue, eye strain, shortness of breath, pale complexion, loose stools, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Empty, weak, soft.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, raise clear Yang to the eyes, improve focus and reduce strain.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This is a plain, organ-nonspecific Qi-deficiency picture, distinct from Pattern 5's own Spleen-specific version — this site has no generic non-organ-specific Qi-deficiency slide, so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Stagnant Liver-Qi Turning Into Fire View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability, red and dry eyes, bitter taste, throbbing headache, blurred vision, worsened by stress or anger.
Tongue: Red sides with yellow dry coating. Pulse: Wiry, rapid.
Treatment principle: Smooth the Liver, clear Heat, harmonize Qi to prevent Fire surging upward to the eyes.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide — Fire and Heat are treated as the same clinical entity here, the same established paraphrase-link convention used throughout this site.

5. Spleen-Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Blurred vision after eating or when tired, poor appetite, bloating, loose stools, fatigue, heaviness in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen-Qi, raise clear Yang to the eyes, strengthen the ocular muscles, resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

6. Phlegm in the Channels

Clinical manifestations: Blurred vision with a heavy, pressing sensation around the eyes, puffy eyelids in the morning, chest tightness, excessive mucus or phlegm, worsens in damp weather.
Tongue: Purple with stasis spots, white greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, choppy or slippery.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, clear sticky obstruction from the eye channels.
Note: no moxa. This is the confirmed-absent Phlegm-in-the-channels Bi-syndrome-adjacent category — no matching slide exists anywhere on this site — so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
