Atopic Dermatitis

How Chinese medicine differentiates atopic dermatitis (eczema) into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Eczema and Contact Dermatitis pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Widespread weeping, fever, or signs of skin infection need prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for atopic dermatitis — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Blood Deficiency With External Wind View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, flaky, or lichenified skin in flexural creases, itching worse at night, pale complexion, dull brittle nails, aversion to wind or drafts, dizziness, dry rough hair.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with a thin white and slightly dry coat. Pulse: Fine, may be wiry at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Blood and moisten dryness, dispel Wind, stop itching, tonify Qi and consolidate the Exterior.
Note: no moxa. Linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency slide, the closest match, with the external-Wind-invasion component flagged as a gap that slide alone does not cover.

2. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Red, hot, weeping lesions with yellow crusting, heavy body sensation, greasy mouth taste, loose sticky stools, worse in humid weather.
Tongue: Red body with a yellow greasy coating, may be swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner, strengthen the Spleen.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Damp-Heat-invading-the-Spleen slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Moist, weeping, oozing skin patches, pale or skin-colored lesions rather than bright red, bloating and loose stools, poor appetite, fatigue after eating.
Tongue: Pale and swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen, resolve Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Heart-Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bright red, hot skin lesions, intense itching with burning sensation, irritability and crying (especially at night), disturbed sleep, mouth or tongue ulcers.
Tongue: Red body with a distinctly redder tip, often with swollen red points at the tip and a yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, overflowing especially at the left front position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heart-Fire, nourish Yin, promote urination and relieve stranguria, calm the Mind.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Heart-Fire-blazing slide.

5. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry, scaly, lichenified patches in flexural areas, intense night itching, dry eyes with blurred vision, lower back and knee soreness, night sweats, heat in the palms, soles, and chest.
Tongue: Red, thin, and cracked, with little or no coating and a dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid, often wiry, weak at the left Chi (Kidney) position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin, supplement Liver and Spleen Yin, benefit Essence, fill Marrow.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
