Aversion to Noise

How Chinese medicine differentiates sound sensitivity and an exaggerated startle response to noise into the 6 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Easily Startled and Fear pages. Acupuncture only β€” no herbs.

New sound sensitivity after a head injury, or paired with hearing changes, needs medical evaluation before any acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for an aversion to noise (hyperacusis) β€” 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
HE-7Calms the Mind and opens the Mind’s orifices. Nourishes Heart-Blood.
P-6Opens the chest and moves Qi and Blood. Calms the Mind. Moves Liver-Qi.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
The Six Patterns

1. Heart Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations that worsen with activity, fatigue, a weak voice, being easily startled by noise, spontaneous daytime sweating.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, thin white coat, may show a midline crack toward the tip in chronic cases. Pulse: Empty, soft and large on contact but fades under pressure, weakest at the left Cun.
Treatment principle: Tonify Heart-Qi, calm the spirit, open the orifices.

2. Heart Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations, a pale complexion, fatigue, insomnia with vivid dreaming, being easily startled by noise, poor memory, dizziness.
Tongue: Pale, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly choppy.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart-Blood, strengthen the Spleen, anchor the Shen.

3. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Five-palm heat, night sweats, irritability and restlessness, flushed cheekbones, dry mouth worse at night, being easily startled by noise.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, clear deficiency-heat, calm the Shen.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this generic, non-organ-specific Empty-Heat-from-Yin-Deficiency category has no matching deck slide on this site.

4. Heart Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Being easily startled by noise, cold hands and feet, chest stuffiness, a pale complexion, palpitations with exertion, a timid spirit.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, especially faint at the left Cun.
Treatment principle: Warm Heart-Yang, harmonize Yin and Yang, calm the spirit, secure the essence.

5. Water Qi Intimidating the Heart

Clinical manifestations: A sensation of fluid rushing from the stomach to the chest, leg or body swelling, cold extremities, palpitations worse lying down, reduced urination, an aversion to noise.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, tender with teeth marks, white slippery water-slick coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery, or deep and fine.
Treatment principle: Warm Yang, transform fluid retention, strengthen the Spleen, subdue the rushing Qi.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Rising Sensation from Stomach and Mitral Valve Prolapse pages leave the identically-named pattern unlinked for the same reason.

6. Phlegm Misting the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mental confusion, rattling throat sounds, chest stuffiness, heavy-headedness, dizziness, nausea, being easily startled by noise.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, thick white greasy coating, may appear stiff or sluggish. Pulse: Slippery, like beads rolling beneath the fingers.
