Bipolar Disorder

How Chinese medicine differentiates bipolar disorder into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care alongside psychiatric treatment, not a substitute for it. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Bipolar disorder needs ongoing psychiatric care, and any thoughts of self-harm need immediate professional help; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, not a substitute for it.

1. Liver Qi Stagnation With Spleen Qi Deficiency That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Distending rib pain worsened by stress, bloating and loose stools, irritability with a quick temper, bitter taste in the mouth, frequent sighing, fatigue despite rest, sensation of heat in the chest or face.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and teeth marks, thin to moderately thick yellow slightly greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, especially in the left Guan (Liver) position.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver Qi stagnation, clear transforming Heat, strengthen Spleen Qi.
Note: no moxa on LR-3/P-6, moxa applicable on ST-36. This site's Liver deck has no slide combining Liver-Qi-stagnation with Spleen-Qi-deficiency, so this is linked to the closest partial match — Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat — on the strength of the shared irritability/bitter-taste/wiry-rapid-pulse core; the Spleen-deficiency component (bloating, loose stools) isn't covered by that slide, flagged rather than hidden.

2. Phlegm Fire Harassing the Pericardium View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Agitation with pressured speech, rattling or gurgling sound in the throat from thick phlegm, red face and red eyes, bitter taste and thirst for cold drinks, chest tightness and heavy head, racing thoughts, intense restlessness.
Tongue: Red, swollen body with a prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Phlegm-Heat from the Gallbladder and Heart, calm the mind.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Pericardium slide.

3. Heart and Spleen Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations or awareness of heartbeat, insomnia with vivid or disturbing dreams, fatigue and physical exhaustion, poor appetite and abdominal bloating, worry and overthinking, sallow or pale complexion, forgetfulness and poor concentration.
Tongue: Pale, tender body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly choppy.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen Qi and nourish Heart Blood to anchor the mind.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Matched to this site's own Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide.

4. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Lower back and knee soreness and weakness, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dry eyes with blurred vision, forgetfulness and poor concentration, insomnia with vivid restless dreams, alternation between depressive emptiness and manic irritability.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, scanty or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, often wiry, weak at the left Chi position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Liver Yin to replenish depleted fluids.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
