Bitter Taste in the Mouth

How Chinese medicine differentiates a persistent bitter taste in the mouth, the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A bitter taste alongside jaundice, severe abdominal pain, or unintended weight loss needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple digestive pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Five Patterns

1. Liver Qi Stagnation that Transforms into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A persistent bitter taste that flares with tension, irritability and explosive anger, distending or burning pain along the ribs, dry mouth and throat, headache at the temples.
Tongue: Red body, especially red along the sides, with yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful, most pronounced at left middle.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver Qi stagnation, clear constrained Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

2. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bitter taste accompanied by a sticky, slimy mouth, bloating and fullness in upper abdomen, sticky or loose bowel movements, heavy and sluggish body limbs.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and drain Dampness, harmonize the middle burner.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Stomach slide, the same one used for Bad Breath and Toothache.

3. Qi Stagnation in Gallbladder and Stomach with Phlegm Heat

Clinical manifestations: Bitter taste worsens after greasy or heavy meals, nausea and belching, epigastric fullness and acid reflux, vivid disturbing dreams, feeling easily startled or anxious.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy coating, sides slightly redder. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Regulate Qi and transform Phlegm, clear Gallbladder and Stomach Heat.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Gallbladder-Phlegm-Heat combined slide (the closest, Damp-Heat in the Gall Bladder, has no Phlegm component), so no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry throat especially at night, night sweats, heat in palms/soles/chest, lower back soreness, tinnitus, malar flush, bitter taste especially noticeable at night.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, floating-empty, weak at Chi.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin, clear Empty-Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-Yin/Empty-Heat slide.

5. Lung Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cough with thick yellow or greenish phlegm, sore throat with redness and swelling, fever or body heat sensation, thirst for cold drinks, chest tightness.
Tongue: Red body, especially at tip and edges, with yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and slippery, possibly overflowing at right Cun.
Treatment principle: Clear Lung Heat, restore descending of Lung Qi, calm the diaphragm.
Note: no moxa. Matched on the internal pattern to this site's Lung-Heat slide — cough, thirst and heat sensation are shared, though the deck slide is framed around cough rather than taste.
