Blank Staring Expression

How Chinese medicine differentiates a dull, unfocused gaze into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Poor Memory and Eye Floaters pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A sudden or new blank stare, especially with loss of responsiveness, needs prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.

1. Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull, lustreless gaze, pale complexion and lips, dizziness or light-headedness, heart palpitations, poor memory and difficulty concentrating.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, possibly choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, nourishes Blood, strengthens the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable on BL-20. This site's decks have no organ-nonspecific plain Blood-deficiency slide; since the gaze itself is the standout symptom and Liver opens to the eyes, linked to the Liver-Blood-deficiency slide as the closest organ match, flagged for that attribution.

2. Qi and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pale, sallow complexion, persistent fatigue worse with exertion, dizziness or lightheadedness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, may feel empty.
Treatment principle: Simultaneously replenishes Qi and Blood, restores nourishment to the spirit.
Note: moxa applicable. This site's decks have no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session; linked instead to the Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide for the Qi component, flagged for the Blood component not being isolated there.

3. Phlegm Misting the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Blank staring expression with a heavy, unfocused quality, mental dullness or clouded thinking, heavy sensation in the head or dizziness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with thick white greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery.
Treatment principle: Scours Phlegm, opens the Heart orifice, restores a clear, bright spirit.
