Congested Nose (Nasal Congestion)

How Chinese medicine differentiates a chronically congested nose, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Congestion with facial pain/swelling, high fever, or blocked on one side only with bleeding needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for a congested nose — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Releases the exterior and unblocks the nose, a master point for the face.
LU-7Diffuses Lung Qi, promotes opening of the nasal passages.
L.I.-20Local point, directly clears nasal obstruction.
G.B.-20Expels Wind, clears Heat from the head.
BL-13Tonifies Lung Qi directly.
ST-36Builds overall Qi, supports the Lungs.
SP-6Regulates the Spleen, resolves Dampness.
BL-20Tonifies Spleen Qi.
REN-12Regulates the Middle Burner, transforms Dampness.
LU-5Clears Lung Heat, restores descending of Lung Qi.
BL-23Tonifies Kidney Yang to address the root deficiency.
DU-4Strengthens the Gate of Life Fire.
The Six Patterns

1. Wind-Cold Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden onset of nasal congestion, clear watery nasal discharge, chills more prominent than fever, no sweating, itchy throat, headache and body aches.
Tongue: Normal or slightly pale body with thin, white, moist coating. Pulse: Floating and tight.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Cold, release the exterior.
Note: moxa applicable given the Cold. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Cold slide.

2. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Thick, yellow or turbid nasal discharge, sensation of heat or burning in the nose, fever stronger than any chills, sore throat, thirst or dry mouth.
Tongue: Red tip with a thin yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Heat, clear Heat, resolve toxicity.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide.

3. Lung Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Mild, intermittent nasal congestion that worsens with fatigue, clear, thin, watery nasal discharge, spontaneous daytime sweating, weak voice, catching colds easily.
Tongue: Pale, tender body with possible teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Empty and weak, especially at right Cun.
Treatment principle: Tonify Lung Qi and secure the exterior.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match — this site's own Lung-Qi deficiency slide explicitly names propensity to catch colds among its symptoms.

4. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Heavy, sticky white nasal discharge, abdominal bloating and loose stools, feeling of heaviness in the head and body, fatigue and poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, strengthen the Spleen, drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen deficiency with Dampness in one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Lung Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Thick yellow or greenish nasal discharge, hot, dry sensation when breathing through the nose, dry mouth and thirst for cold drinks, fever, cough with thick yellow phlegm.
Tongue: Red body, especially at the tip, with a yellow dry coating, possibly prickly papillae. Pulse: Rapid and slippery, often forceful at right Cun.
Treatment principle: Clear Lung Heat and unblock the nasal passages.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — this site's own Lung-Heat slide names "flaring of nostrils" among its symptoms, an especially apt fit for nasal congestion.

6. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Congestion worsens at night and with cold, cold and aching lower back and knees, frequent clear urination especially at night, profound fatigue and low spirits.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, and tender with teeth marks, wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, and weak, especially feeble at the rear.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney Yang and warm the Gate of Life.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yang deficiency slide.
