Dysautonomia

How Chinese medicine differentiates dysautonomia — autonomic nervous system dysfunction spanning the Heart, Liver, Spleen and Kidney networks — into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care alongside medical management, not a substitute for it. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Dysautonomia needs medical diagnosis and ongoing management of its underlying cause; acupuncture here is supportive of the underlying pattern, not a substitute for that care.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for dysautonomia (supportive, alongside medical care) — 12 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Explosive anger or irritability, bitter taste in the mouth, distending or burning pain along the ribs, red face and eyes, headache at the temples, vivid or disturbing dreams, palpitations.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Soothe the Liver, clear Heat, regulate Qi.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

2. Disharmony Between Heart and Kidneys View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Difficulty falling asleep or frequent waking, mental restlessness and irritability, palpitations, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, dry mouth or tinnitus.
Tongue: Red, thin body with a redder tip and little or no coating, possible midline crack. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weaker at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart Yin, clear empty Heat, restore the Heart-Kidney connection.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose stools or diarrhea, abdominal bloating and fullness after eating, heaviness of the body and limbs, poor appetite, fatigue and lack of energy, head feels heavy or muzzy, nausea after eating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks and white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonify Spleen Qi and drain Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Night sweats, five-palm heat, lower back soreness and weakness, tinnitus or diminished hearing, dry throat especially at night, malar flush, insomnia with night waking, persistent fatigue.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with little or no coating and possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak at the rear (Chi) position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin and clear empty-Heat to anchor Yang and stabilize autonomic function.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

5. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Persistent fatigue and weakness, pale or sallow complexion, dizziness or lightheadedness, heart palpitations especially with exertion, shortness of breath on exertion, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or teeth-marked with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Qi and Blood to rebuild the body's foundational reserves.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Phlegm-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Chest oppression and palpitations, restlessness and irritability, sensation of a lump in the throat, thick yellow greasy tongue coating, nausea or a heavy feeling after eating.
Tongue: Red, swollen body with thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, resolve Phlegm, regulate Qi.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Heart slide — the chest-oppression, palpitations, and thick-greasy-coating picture lines up closely despite this pattern's own "Phlegm-Heat" naming rather than "Phlegm-Fire".
