Ear Discharge

How Chinese medicine differentiates ear discharge — distinct from Otitis Media and Ear Pain already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Ear discharge with fever, severe pain, or hearing loss needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for ear discharge — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
S.I.-19Local point, directly clears Heat and opens the ear canal.
G.B.-20Dispels exterior Wind-Heat and benefits the sensory orifices.
T.B.-5Releases the exterior and expels Wind-Heat, especially for ear and head symptoms.
T.B.-21Local point in front of the ear, opens the ear orifice and helps drain Dampness.
LR-3Source point of the Liver channel, clears Liver-Heat and regulates Qi.
G.B.-34He-Sea point of the Gallbladder channel, resolves Damp-Heat in the channel.
T.B.-17Local point behind the earlobe, drains Heat and resolves ear discharge.
ST-36Tonifies Spleen and Stomach-Qi to transform Dampness.
SP-9Resolves Dampness and regulates fluid pathways.
BL-20Directly tonifies Spleen-Qi to address the root deficiency.
ST-40Key point to transform Phlegm and Dampness throughout the body.
ST-44Clears Heat from the Stomach channel contributing to Phlegm-Heat.
KI-3Yuan-source point of the Kidney channel, nourishes Kidney-Yin and anchors deficiency Fire.
BL-23Back-Shu point of the Kidney, strengthens Kidney Essence.
KI-6Nourishes Yin, cools Blood, calms the mind.
The Six Patterns

1. Wind-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Thin yellow or purulent ear discharge, ear redness swelling and pain, fever with mild chills or wind aversion, sore red throat, headache and nasal congestion with yellow discharge.
Tongue: Red tip and edges with a thin yellow (or thin white turning yellow) coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Heat, relieve the exterior, and clear Heat from the upper body including the ear.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide.

2. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel

Clinical manifestations: Thick yellow sticky ear discharge with possible foul odour, bitter taste in the mouth, feeling of heaviness in the body, pain or fullness along the ribs.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating thicker at centre and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. This site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide is genital/vaginal-discharge-specific (checked directly), not a match for an ear presentation, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver-Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Yellow-green ear discharge, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability and short temper, throbbing temple headache, loud tinnitus resembling rushing water.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and dry yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, forceful.
Treatment principle: Drain Liver-Fire and clear Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gallbladder channels.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Fire-blazing slide.

4. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Clear or sticky ear discharge (chronic), heaviness of the body and limbs, abdominal bloating worse after eating, loose or unformed stools, fatigue and lack of energy.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft and lacking force.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen-Qi and leach out Dampness, addressing the root of chronic ear discharge.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Phlegm-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Thick, sticky, yellow-green ear discharge, chest fullness and nausea, restlessness and irritability, sensation of something stuck in the throat.
Tongue: Red body, swollen, with thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and resolve Phlegm, particularly where Phlegm-Heat obstructs the ear channel.
Note: no moxa. This pattern is generic Phlegm-Heat without naming a specific organ, and no deck on this site has an organ-nonspecific Phlegm-Heat slide, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scanty sticky dark yellow ear discharge, lower back soreness and weakness, night sweats and five-palm heat, dizziness and tinnitus, dry throat worse at night.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin and clear Empty-Heat to address the internal heat drying out normal fluids.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.
