Enuresis

How Chinese medicine differentiates enuresis — bedwetting past the age it's expected to resolve on its own — into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Nocturia and Incontinence pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Bedwetting that starts suddenly after a long dry period, or comes with painful urination or excessive thirst, needs medical evaluation to rule out an infection or other cause before assuming a simple pattern.

The Four Patterns

1. Kidney Qi Not Firm View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Deep-sleep bedwetting without waking, clear and copious urine, cold hands and feet, sore and weak lower back and knees, fatigue and lack of strength.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, moist body with thin white coat, may have tooth marks. Pulse: Deep, weak, and fine, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Warms Kidney-Yang, disperses Cold, secures Essence and stops enuresis.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Qi-not-Firm slide.

2. Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bedwetting often with daytime dribbling, fatigue and weakness, poor appetite and loose stools, pale face and weak voice, shortness of breath, spontaneous sweating.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender body with teeth marks and a thin white slippery coating. Pulse: Weak, especially at the right Cun (Lung) and Guan (Spleen) positions, soft and forceless.
Treatment principle: Tonifies the Middle and augments Qi, raises sunken Yang, lifts Spleen and Lung Qi to restore Bladder control.
Note: moxa strongly indicated throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-and-Lung-Qi-deficiency slide.

3. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark yellow, strong-smelling urine, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability and restless sleep, genital discomfort or itching.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating thicker at the center and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drains excess Fire from Liver and Gallbladder, clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner, prevents Damp-Heat from disturbing the Bladder.
Note: no moxa. Since this presentation is urinary rather than genital, linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Bladder slide via the established Lower-Burner organ-system convention rather than the Liver deck's genital-specific Damp-Heat slide.

4. Disharmony Between Heart and Kidneys View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Bedwetting often occurs during dreams, difficulty falling asleep or frequent waking, mental restlessness and irritability, vivid or disturbing dreams, heat in the palms, soles, and chest, night sweats, dry mouth and throat at night.
Tongue: Red, thin body with a redder tip, little or no coating, possible midline crack. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weaker at the rear (Chi) positions, especially on the left.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Yin, nourishes Blood, tonifies Heart-Qi, restores communication between Heart and Kidneys.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide — this session's established finding that slide is Yin-deficiency/Empty-Heat framed applies directly here.
