Eye Discharge

How Chinese medicine differentiates eye discharge — distinct from Allergic Conjunctivitis and Swollen Eyes already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Eye discharge with vision changes or severe pain needs urgent medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.

The Six Patterns

1. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scant sticky or stringy discharge, dry gritty eyes worse at night, dry mouth with desire to sip water, night sweats and heat in the palms soles and chest.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body with cracks, little or no coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney-Yin and Liver-Blood while clearing Empty-Heat from the eyes.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation that Transforms into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Red gritty eyes with a burning sensation, small amount of sticky discharge worse with stress, irritability and explosive anger, bitter taste in the mouth, distending pain along the ribcage.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Liver-Fire, drain Damp-Heat from the Liver channel, relieve eye redness and sticky discharge.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

3. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Thin watery eye discharge, eye dryness and fatigue worse with exertion or prolonged reading, pale complexion and general fatigue, dizziness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen to generate Blood and Qi, thereby nourishing the eyes.
Note: moxa applicable on tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Qi and Blood deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Wind-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden onset of red itchy eyes, watery or sticky discharge that may crust, sore throat and mild fever or chills, thirst with desire to drink.
Tongue: Red tip and edges with thin yellow (or thin white-to-yellow) coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release exterior Wind-Heat, clear the eyes, stop discharge through dispersal.

5. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Copious sticky eye discharge especially in the morning, feeling of heaviness in the body and limbs, poor appetite and loose stools, fatigue and drowsiness after eating.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks and a white greasy coating. Pulse: Soggy and slowed-down, possibly slippery.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen, transform Dampness, and stop the upward steaming of turbid Dampness to the eyes.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Spleen-Qi deficiency with Dampness into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Thick yellow sticky discharge, worse in the morning or after heavy meals, upper abdominal bloating and nausea, sticky or bitter taste in the mouth, heavy feeling in the body and limbs.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often also slippery.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the middle burner and stop the upward steam that clouds the eyes.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
