Eye Pain

How Chinese medicine differentiates eye pain — distinct from Red Eyes and Eye Fatigue already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden or severe eye pain with vision loss needs urgent medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for eye pain — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind, regulates Defensive Qi.
G.B.-20Expels Wind-Heat from the head and eyes.
BL-1Essential local point for acute eye disorders.
LR-3Primary point to subdue rising Liver-Yang and clear Liver-Fire.
LR-2Fire point, drains excess Liver-Fire directly.
KI-3Nourishes Kidney-Yin to moisten the eyes.
SP-10Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood, strengthens Spleen and Stomach.
SP-6Nourishes Blood and harmonizes Liver, Spleen and Kidneys.
The Six Patterns

1. Wind-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Acute redness and burning pain, sensitivity to light and wind, mild fever, sore throat or thirst, thick yellow or watery eye discharge.
Tongue: Red tip and edges with thin yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Disperse Wind-Heat, clear Heat, resolve toxicity.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide.

2. Liver-Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense burning or distending eye pain, red swollen eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, irritability and short temper, pain worsens with anger or stress.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry, rapid and forceful, especially at left Guan.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clear Heat from the Liver channel.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Fire-blazing slide.

3. Damp-Heat in the Liver Channel

Clinical manifestations: Thick yellow eye discharge that may stick the eyelids, bitter taste in the mouth, feeling of fullness along the ribs, dark scanty or painful urination, red swollen painful eyes.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating thicker at the centre and root. Pulse: Wiry, slippery and rapid.
Treatment principle: Drain Damp-Heat from the Liver and Gallbladder channels, clear Heat from the upper body.
Note: no moxa. This site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Liver slide is genital/vaginal-discharge-specific (checked directly), not a match for an eye presentation, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry gritty eye pain, blurred vision worse at night or evening, sensation of heat in the palms soles and chest, lower back and knee soreness, eyes lack proper moisture and nourishment.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry, weak at left Chi.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, clear deficiency Heat, brighten the eyes.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

5. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain that does not move, pain worsens at night, dark spots or bruising visible on the white of the eye or eyelid, pain aggravated by pressing on the eye, often follows injury or long-standing inflammation.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coating. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, nourish Blood to restore normal circulation through the eye vessels.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a purple/dusky tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.

6. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Dull lingering eye ache, blurred vision especially when tired, fatigue and general weakness, pale or sallow complexion, poor appetite, worse after prolonged reading or screen use.
Tongue: Pale body, may be thin or have teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, and empty.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen.
Note: moxa applicable on tonifying points. No deck on this site combines Qi and Blood deficiency into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.
