Lumps

How Chinese medicine differentiates general body lumps into the four patterns described for them, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Nodules, Cysts and Breast Lumps pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Any new lump needs a proper medical examination first, especially if it grows, hardens, or comes with other symptoms — this page never replaces that.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for lumps — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
LIV-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Extinguishes interior Wind. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind and releases the Exterior. Promotes the diffusing of Lung-Qi, regulates the Defensive Qi and sweating. Stops pain.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
The Four Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Hard, fixed lump; stabbing pain worse with pressure; irritability; distending chest pain.
Tongue: Purple or dark, stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood, dispels stasis, moves Qi and relieves pain.
Note: no moxa. No combined Qi-and-Blood-stagnation slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

2. Phlegm in the Channels, Joints and Muscles

Clinical manifestations: Hard lumps near the joints; stabbing pain in the muscles; purplish discoloration; numbness; heavy sensation in the limbs.
Tongue: Purple, stasis spots, white greasy coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy, or wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Dissipates nodules, transforms Phlegm, eliminates Dampness and invigorates Blood.
Note: Mixed Deficiency/Excess. This site's decks have no Phlegm-in-the-channels slide, confirmed absent many times — no pattern link is given here.

3. Toxic-Heat Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Red, hot, severely painful lump; pus or discharge; high fever; intense thirst; restlessness.
Tongue: Deep red or crimson, thick dry yellow coat. Pulse: Rapid and forceful.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat, resolves toxin, disperses swelling and invigorates Blood.
Note: Signs of infection need medical review. no moxa. This site's decks have no standalone Toxic-Heat slide, confirmed absent many times — no pattern link is given here.

4. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pain; profound fatigue; pale, dusky complexion; shortness of breath; dizziness; a dull ache.
Tongue: Pale with a dark or purplish tinge, stasis spots, tooth marks. Pulse: Deep, fine or weak, and choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, invigorates Blood, dispels stasis and unblocks the channels.
Note: Mixed Deficiency/Excess. No single deck slide combines Qi deficiency with Blood stagnation — no pattern link is given here.
