Cysts

How Chinese medicine differentiates cysts — distinct from Ganglion Cyst and Ovarian Cysts already covered — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A new, growing, or painful cyst always needs medical evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for cysts — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang, clears interior Wind.
LR-14Alarm point of the Liver, unblocks rib-area stagnation.
SP-6Harmonizes Liver, Spleen and Kidney systems.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood, strengthens the Spleen.
SP-9Primary point for draining Dampness.
ST-40Transforms Phlegm and Dampness.
REN-12Regulates Stomach and Spleen, addresses epigastric fullness.
SP-10Sea of Blood, activates circulation and dissolves congealed Blood.
BL-17Influential point for Blood, moves stasis and eases fixed pain.
KI-3Source point of the Kidney channel, tonifies Kidney-Yin.
The Five Patterns

1. Liver-Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cyst size fluctuates with stress, distension along the ribs and flanks, frequent sighing or sensation of a lump in the throat, irritability and mood swings, breast tenderness, dull aching pain that moves.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body with red/purple sides and thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string, most prominent at left middle position.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, nourish Blood and soften the Liver, strengthen the Spleen.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

2. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen

Clinical manifestations: Bitter or sticky mouth taste, bloating and fullness in the upper abdomen, loose sticky or incomplete bowel movements, heavy foggy sensation in the head and body, thirst with little desire to drink.
Tongue: Red body, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating especially at centre and root. Pulse: Soggy and rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Regulate Qi and transform Phlegm, clear Gallbladder and Stomach Heat, dry Dampness.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site combines Damp-Heat across both the Stomach and Spleen into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

3. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: Soft movable lumps, bloating and distension after eating, heavy sensation in the body and limbs, loose sticky stools, greasy sticky mouth sensation, nausea or foggy-headedness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with scalloped edges, thick white greasy coating appearing moist. Pulse: Slippery, often soft or soggy, especially at right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness and transform Phlegm, regulate Qi and harmonize the middle burner, direct rebellious Qi downward.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a combined Damp-Phlegm category outside the Lungs, a confirmed and recurring absence, so no pattern link is given here.

4. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain that does not move, pain worsens at night and with pressure, dark purplish lips nails or facial complexion, dark menstrual blood with clots, palpable hard lump feeling fixed in place.
Tongue: Dark purple body with possible stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, disperse fixed masses, warm the channels and disperse Cold.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a dark purple tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.

5. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull aching cyst pain, night sweats with heat in the palms soles and chest, dizziness tinnitus and dry eyes, insomnia with vivid restless dreams, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid and wiry, especially weak at left Chi.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, soothe the Liver and regulate Qi, nourish Blood and soften the Liver.
Note: no moxa. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
