Measles

How Chinese medicine follows measles through its three stages — a predictable journey matched to treatment at each point — and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. The MMR vaccine is highly effective prevention. Measles can cause serious complications including pneumonia and encephalitis, especially in young children — high fever, difficulty breathing, or confusion need prompt medical evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for measles — 8 key points, used across the three stages below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind. Regulates Defensive Qi.
L.I.-11Clears Heat and cools the Blood. Resolves Dampness.
BL-13Stimulates the diffusing and descending of Lung-Qi. Expels external Wind.
DU-14Clears Heat. Releases the Exterior and expels exterior Wind.
SP-10Cools Blood. Invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.
ST-36Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Stomach and Spleen.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Strengthens the lower back and knees.
The Three Stages

1. Wind-Heat (Early Stage) View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fever greater than chills with mild sweating, sore red throat, cough with yellow phlegm, red watery eyes, rash beginning behind the ears and spreading to the face, thirst and dry mouth.
Tongue: Red tip and edges with thin yellow (or white-to-yellow) coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release exterior Wind-Heat, clear Lung Heat, vent the rash outward.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide, the established exterior-invasion convention.

2. Toxic-Heat (Peak Stage)

Clinical manifestations: High fever (39°C or higher), dense dark-red or purple rash covering the body, intense thirst with craving for cold drinks, restlessness and irritability, red sore throat.
Tongue: Red body with prickly thorns and dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, often full or overflowing.
Treatment principle: Clear toxic Heat aggressively and cool the Blood to prevent complications.
Note: no moxa; high fever with dense dark rash should be medically monitored regardless. This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Qi and Yin Deficiency (Recovery Stage)

Clinical manifestations: Lingering low-grade fever (worse in the afternoon), deep fatigue and lack of strength, dry mouth and throat with little desire to drink, night sweats, poor appetite.
Tongue: Red or pale-red body with thin or absent coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, often rapid.
Treatment principle: Gently tonify both Qi and Yin to rebuild the body's depleted reserves.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Qi-and-Yin-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
