Scarlet Fever

How Chinese medicine differentiates scarlet fever — an epidemic Heat-toxin progressing through the body — into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Scarlet fever is caused by Group A Streptococcus and needs antibiotic treatment to prevent complications like rheumatic fever; acupuncture here supports the underlying pattern, not a substitute for that treatment.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for scarlet fever (supportive, alongside antibiotic treatment) — 8 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Four Patterns

1. Wind-Heat Invading the Lungs View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden high fever with mild chills, sore and red throat, fine red rash just beginning to appear, cough with yellow phlegm.
Tongue: Red tip with thin yellow coating. Pulse: Floating and rapid.
Treatment principle: Release the pathogen outward while clearing Heat and cooling the throat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Invasion-of-Lungs-by-Wind-Heat slide, the established exterior-invasion convention.

2. Toxic-Heat

Clinical manifestations: High fever with intense thirst for cold drinks, severely sore throat with erosion or white patches, bright scarlet rash covering the body, restlessness and irritability with agitation.
Tongue: Red body with prickly raised papillae, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful.
Treatment principle: Clear intense internal fire at the Qi and Ying levels.
Note: no moxa; eroded/white-patched throat needs medical evaluation and antibiotics regardless. This site has no standalone Toxic-Heat slide on any deck — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

3. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Purplish-red, patchy rash, deep red tongue with red prickles resembling a strawberry appearance, high fever worsening at night, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, extreme restlessness and irritability.
Tongue: Deep crimson body with red prickles and thin dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and wiry, possibly slippery and forceful.
Treatment principle: Cool the Blood and stop reckless bleeding.
Note: no moxa; bleeding gums/nosebleeds with high fever need medical evaluation regardless. This site has no standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Low-grade afternoon or evening fever, night sweats, dry mouth and throat with thirst for small sips, flushed cheekbones, restlessness and trouble sleeping, heat sensation in the palms/soles/chest.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with visible cracks, scanty or entirely peeled coating. Pulse: Thready and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish depleted Yin fluids and gently clear residual empty Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.
