Night Terrors in Children

How Chinese medicine differentiates night terrors in children into the 4 patterns behind it, and the points for each. A deliberate pediatric companion to this site's own general Night Terrors page β€” the pattern set differs, with a Food Stagnation and a Spleen-Yang-Deficiency pattern unique to the child presentation. Acupuncture only β€” no herbs.

Frequent or worsening night terrors, or any daytime behavioral change, warrant a pediatrician's evaluation alongside any acupuncture care.

1. Heart Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden fearful screaming during sleep, a bright red flushed face, mouth or tongue ulcers with red edges, thirst for cold drinks, daytime irritability and anxiety, an inability to settle back to sleep.
Tongue: Red with a markedly redder tip, swollen red points or prickles at the tip, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid and forceful, overflowing, strongest at the left Cun.
Treatment principle: Drain excess internal Heat through the Small Intestine and settle the spirit with quiet routines.

2. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Tongue: Normal, thick greasy or curd-like coating, thickest in the centre. Pulse: Slippery, especially forceful at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Resolve the food stagnation, harmonize Stomach function, and clear the turbid Heat rising to disturb the Heart spirit.

3. Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A weak whimpering cry, dull abdominal pain that improves with warmth and pressure, cold hands and feet, poor appetite with bloating, loose watery stools with undigested food.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with scalloped edges, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Warm the middle burner, strengthen Spleen-Yang, and expel the internal Cold disturbing sleep.

4. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Sudden explosive night terrors with screaming and a flushed face, intense daytime irritability and a quick temper, red painful eyes, a bitter taste, dry throat craving cold drinks, constipation.
Tongue: Red with redder sides, dry yellow coating, possible red prickles. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, often forceful at the left Guan.
