Night Terrors

How Chinese medicine differentiates night terrors in adults — distinct from Night Terrors in Children and Nightmares already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Frequent night terrors, especially with injury risk or daytime distress, warrant a sleep-medicine evaluation before assuming a simple pattern.

2. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Intense, vivid nightmares with confusion and fear, chest oppression and a phlegm sensation in the throat, bitter taste, flushed red face and eyes, gurgling sounds, mental restlessness and agitation.
Tongue: Red, swollen body with a red prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, full at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, transform Phlegm, and calm the mind.

6. Food Stagnation in the Stomach View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Upper abdominal bloating and distending pain worse with pressure, sour rotten-smelling belching and acid regurgitation, foul-smelling flatulence and loose stools with a sour smell, night terrors with an epigastric fullness feeling.
