Oily or Clammy Skin Sensation

How Chinese medicine differentiates an oily or clammy skin sensation into the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Oily Skin and Cool or Clammy Skin Sensation pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden clammy skin with chest pain, confusion, or fainting is a medical emergency — seek immediate care.

The Four Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in Stomach and Spleen View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Oily, greasy skin on the face and scalp with redness and itching; a bitter or sticky mouth taste; bloating after meals; sticky, incomplete stools; a heavy, foggy head sensation.
Tongue: Red, possibly swollen with teeth marks, thick yellow greasy coating at the centre and root. Pulse: Soggy, rapid, often slippery.
Treatment principle: Clears Damp-Heat from the Stomach and Spleen, transforms Dampness and promotes Qi movement.
Note: no moxa.

2. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Clammy, oily skin without redness; fatigue worsening after meals; loose stools; abdominal bloating; body and limb heaviness; no heat signs present.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with scalloped edges, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft, lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Spleen Qi, strengthens digestive function and gently drains Dampness.
Note: moxa is appropriate. No standalone Spleen-Deficiency-with-Dampness slide exists on this site's decks — no pattern link is given here.

3. Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability and a short temper; a bitter morning taste; oily, red, itchy skin; rib-side pain or distension, especially on the right; dark yellow urine; worsening with emotional stress.
Tongue: Red, especially at the sides, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drains Liver and Gallbladder Fire, clears Damp-Heat and smooths Liver Qi stagnation.
Note: no moxa.

4. Phlegm-Dampness in the Middle-Burner

Clinical manifestations: A thick, greasy film coating the skin, not just shiny; a heavy, sluggish body; bloating after eating; a sticky, greasy mouth taste without thirst; cystic acne or nodules; chest heaviness.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, teeth-marked, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Slippery, often slow or moderate, soggy at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dries Dampness and transforms Phlegm, regulates Qi and harmonizes the Middle Burner.
Note: no moxa contraindicated, moxa acceptable. This site's decks have no Phlegm-Dampness-in-the-Middle-Burner slide, confirmed absent again — no pattern link is given here.
