Pale Menstrual Flow

How Chinese medicine differentiates a pale, thin menstrual flow into the 5 patterns behind it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Menorrhagia and Dysmenorrhea pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

A pale flow paired with extreme fatigue or breathlessness may reflect significant anemia, which needs medical evaluation.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for pale menstrual flow — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Promotes the function of the Liver and the smooth flow of Liver-Qi.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
REN-4Nourishes Blood and Yin. Strengthens the Kidneys. Strengthens the Uterus and regulates menstruation.
The Five Patterns

1. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, a pale complexion, a scanty thin watery flow, palpitations, dizziness, poor appetite.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, empty, weakest at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify both Qi and Blood.
Note: Confirmed absent again: standalone combined Qi-and-Blood-Deficiency has no matching deck slide on this site.

2. Spleen Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pale watery menstrual blood, poor appetite with bloating, fatigue that worsens with activity, a pale complexion and lips.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, choppy, weak especially at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Spleen-Qi to produce sufficient Blood.

3. Kidney Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Sore weak lower back, frequent nighttime urination, fatigue, dizziness or tinnitus, pale thin menstrual blood.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy with possible tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep and weak, especially at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Kidney-Qi and nourish the Directing and Penetrating Vessels.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's kidney deck has no plain Kidney-Qi-Deficiency slide of its own.

4. Damp-Phlegm in the Uterus

Clinical manifestations: Pale sticky menstrual blood, a scanty flow, copious white vaginal discharge, abdominal heaviness, a tendency to weight gain, nausea.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with teeth marks, white greasy coating thicker at the root. Pulse: Slippery and deep, may be slow or soft.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, and move Qi.
Note: Confirmed absent again: this site's own Restless Fetus page leaves the closely-related Blood-Stagnation-and-Phlegm-in-the-Uterus pattern unlinked for the same reason.

5. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: A pale watery menstrual flow that feels cold, a sore cold lower back and knees, frequent clear urination especially at night, overall coldness worse in the lower body, low energy.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, wet white coating. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the Kidney positions.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney-Yang to restore the body's warming fire.
