Pale Urine

How Chinese medicine differentiates persistently pale, copious urine into the four patterns described for it, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's Frequent Urination and Nocturia pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Very pale, copious urine with excessive thirst and unexplained weight loss needs a medical check for diabetes or a hormonal cause.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for pale, watery urine — 3 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
REN-4Nourishes Blood and Yin. Strengthens the Kidneys. Strengthens the Uterus and regulates menstruation.
BL-23Tonifies the Kidneys and nourishes the Kidney-Essence. Consolidates Kidney-Qi. Strengthens the lower back.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Tonifies the Original Qi.
The Four Patterns

1. Kidney Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Frequent, copious, pale urine, especially at night; a deep, bone-level cold in the lower back and knees; feeling chilly throughout the body; low energy; reduced sex drive; fatigue.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, swollen, tooth-marked, wet white coat. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Warms Kidney Yang, restores the Gate of Life Fire to properly transform fluids.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.

2. Kidney Qi Not Firm View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dribbling after urination; urinary incontinence or bedwetting; a bearing-down sensation in the lower abdomen; weak, sore lower back and knees; increased night-time urination.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, moist, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep and weak, especially faint at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Secures Kidney Qi, strengthens the Bladder's holding function and astringes Essence.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.

3. Bladder Deficient and Cold View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Frequent, pale, copious urination; a cold sensation specifically in the lower abdomen and lower back; dribbling or incontinence; night-time urination; general chilliness with a preference for warmth.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, wet, thin white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, weak, often slow, especially faint at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Warms the Bladder directly, restores its transformative capacity for fluids and disperses local Cold.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated. Linked to this site's own Bladder-Deficient-and-Cold slide.

4. Spleen Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Pale urine with loose, watery stools containing undigested food; cold hands and feet; dull abdominal pain relieved by warmth and pressure; poor appetite; bloating after eating; fatigue and heaviness in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender, scalloped, white slippery coat. Pulse: Deep, slow, weak, especially empty at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Warms and tonifies Spleen Yang to restore the digestive fire's ability to process fluids.
Note: moxa is strongly indicated.
