Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

How Chinese medicine differentiates pelvic inflammatory disease, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Fever, severe pelvic pain, or suspected acute infection needs urgent medical evaluation before acupuncture is considered.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for pelvic inflammatory disease — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

SP-6Strengthens the Spleen, resolves Dampness, moves Blood and eliminates stasis.
SP-10Cools Blood, invigorates Blood and eliminates stasis.

The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Heat and Blood Stagnation in the Lower Burner

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pelvic pain; sensation of heat in the pelvis; dark menstrual blood with clots; yellow, sticky vaginal discharge; irritability and emotional tension.
Tongue: Reddish-purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Deep, choppy, rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis.
Note: no moxa. No deck on this site has a Heat-and-Blood-stagnation-in-the-Lower-Burner category, so no pattern link is given here.

2. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pelvic pain; lower abdominal distension and bloating; pain worse with pressure; dark menstrual blood with clots; irritability and emotional tension.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and invigorate Blood, dispel stasis and alleviate pain.
LR-3 ↓ SP-10 ↓ SP-6 ↓ Ren-4 ⊥ EX-CA-1 (Zigong) ↓
Note: no moxa. Matches Liver-Blood stasis — dark, clotted menstrual blood and fixed stabbing pain are shared, gynecologically-framed hallmarks.

3. Cold-Dampness in the Lower Burner View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cold sensation in the lower abdomen; heavy, dragging feeling in the pelvis; profuse white or clear watery vaginal discharge without odor; dull, aching lower back pain worse with cold or damp; loose or watery stools; cold limbs.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, excessively moist. Pulse: Deep, slow, soggy.
Treatment principle: Warm the channels and dispel Cold, transform Dampness, warm the uterus.
Resolve Dampness
Note: moxa applicable on the Warm-the-root points. Matches Damp-Cold in the Bladder — a heavy, dragging feeling and pale, turbid discharge share the same Cold-Damp nature.

4. Qi Deficiency Causing Blood Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Dull, persistent pelvic ache worse with pressure or exertion; deep fatigue and lack of strength; pale or dusky complexion with a greyish tinge; shortness of breath with minimal activity; fixed pain that does not move.
Tongue: Pale-dark or pale-purple body, possible stasis spots and teeth marks, thin white coat. Pulse: Deep, fine, choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, restore the propulsive force for circulation.
Tonify Qi
Invigorate Blood
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify-Qi point. No deck on this site combines Qi deficiency with Blood stagnation into one slide, so no pattern link is given here.

5. Blood Stagnation in the Directing and Penetrating Vessels

Clinical manifestations: Fixed, stabbing pelvic pain; dark menstrual blood with clots; painful periods improving after passing clots; pain worse at night; palpable masses in the lower abdomen; difficulty conceiving; low back soreness and weak knees.
Tongue: Dark purple body, possible stasis spots, engorged sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, often wiry at the left middle position, deep at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis, dissolve fixed masses, nourish Kidney-Yin to strengthen the Chong and Ren vessels.
Invigorate Blood
SP-6 ↓ SP-10 ↓ EX-CA-1 (Zigong) ↓
Nourish and warm the root
Note: moxa applicable on the Nourish-and-warm points. No deck on this site has a Chong/Ren-vessel-specific Blood-stasis category, so no pattern link is given here.

6. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency Causing Heat in the Blood View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull, burning pelvic pain worse at night; night sweats and afternoon tidal heat; dry mouth and throat, especially at night; thin, dark menstrual blood or spotting; low back soreness and weak knees; dizziness, tinnitus, or dry eyes.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry body, little or no coating, possible cracks and redder sides. Pulse: Fine, rapid, often wiry at the left middle position, weak at the left rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney and Liver Yin, clear deficiency Heat, nourish Blood.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Kidney- and Liver-Yin deficiency.
