Retinal Disease

How Chinese medicine differentiates retinal disease in general — distinct from Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Supportive care only. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Retinal disease can threaten vision and always needs ophthalmology evaluation and treatment; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, never a substitute for it.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for retinal disease — 11 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

PointKey action
BL-1Expels Wind. Clears Heat. Brightens the eyes.
ST-36Benefits Stomach and Spleen. Tonifies Qi and Blood. Brightens the eyes.
SP-6Strengthens the Spleen. Nourishes Blood and Yin. Resolves Dampness.
KI-3Tonifies the Kidneys (both Yin and Yang). Benefits Essence.
G.B.-37Brightens the eyes. Conducts Fire downwards.
LR-3Subdues Liver-Yang. Promotes the smooth flow of Liver-Qi. Invigorates Blood.
L.I.-4Expels exterior Wind. Removes obstructions from the channel. Benefits the eyes.
G.B.-20Extinguishes interior Wind. Subdues Liver-Yang. Clears Heat.
ST-40Resolves Phlegm and Dampness.
SP-9Regulates the Spleen. Resolves Dampness. Opens the Water passages.
ST-44Clears Heat. Regulates the Intestines and resolves Damp-Heat.
The Six Patterns

↑ reinforcing   ↓ reducing   ⊥ even method.

1. Qi and Yin Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Blurred vision worsening with fatigue, dry gritty eyes, floaters, persistent tiredness, shortness of breath on exertion.
Tongue: Red or pale-red body with thin/absent dry coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, often rapid.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and generate fluids to nourish the retina.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site's decks have no combined Qi-and-Yin-deficiency slide (confirmed absent many times before), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

2. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dry gritty eyes, dim or blurred vision especially at night, lower back soreness, night sweats, heat in the palms/soles/chest, dizziness.
Tongue: Red thin body with cracks, little coating, dry. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry, weak at the left Chi position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Liver-Kidney Yin to restore retinal moisture and vision.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

3. Empty-Heat Caused by Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Retinal hemorrhages or microaneurysms, eye redness and dryness, heat sensation in the palms/soles/chest, evening/night symptom worsening, night sweats, restlessness.
Tongue: Red thin dry body with cracks, little coating. Pulse: Fine and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and clear deficiency Heat to prevent retinal bleeding.
Note: no moxa given the Empty-Heat. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

4. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing fixed eye or head pain, dark spots, floaters or curtain shadow in vision, nocturnal worsening, dark clotted menses.
Tongue: Purple/dusky body with stasis spots, thin white coat, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis to restore retinal circulation.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the well-established dark/purple stasis-spot-tongue marker.

5. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Heavy sensation in the eyes/head as if wrapped in wet cloth, retinal edema with waxy yellowish exudates, foggy cloudy vision.
Tongue: Pale swollen with scalloped edges, thick white greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery.
Treatment principle: Transform Dampness and strengthen the Spleen to clear turbidity.
Note: no moxa. This is the confirmed-absent non-Lung Damp-Phlegm category — no matching slide exists anywhere on this site outside the Lung deck — so no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Damp-Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Eyes heavy and sticky as if full of fluid, macular edema with yellow exudates, sticky/bitter mouth taste with poor appetite, heavy sluggish body, loose sticky incomplete stools.
Tongue: Red body with yellow greasy difficult-to-scrape coating. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat and dry Dampness to resolve retinal fluid accumulation.
Note: no moxa. This digestive Damp-Heat picture (sticky/bitter taste, poor appetite, loose stools) was matched on the internal pattern rather than a dedicated eye slide — this site's Damp-Heat-in-the-Stomach slide covers the same underlying mechanism, the eye correlation noted separately, the same logic already used for BPH and Seborrheic Dermatitis.
