Sadness

How Chinese medicine differentiates persistent sadness — distinct from Depression already covered, which is a sustained clinical diagnosis — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent sadness with hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm needs prompt mental-health evaluation; acupuncture here is supportive alongside that care, never a substitute for it.
General Acupuncture Points

The Six Patterns

1. Liver-Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Frequent sighing, chest/rib distension, irritability alternating with low mood, breast tenderness, irregular menstruation.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body with reddish sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, especially at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Course the Liver and resolve constraint, move Qi to relieve chest tension.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

2. Heart-Blood Deficiency With Liver-Qi Stagnation

Clinical manifestations: Unexplained sadness/crying, palpitations, chest tightness, sighing, pale face, insomnia, poor memory.
Tongue: Pale thin body with reddish sides, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and wiry, weak at the left Cun, taut at the left Guan.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart-Blood while smoothing Liver-Qi flow.
Note: moxa applicable on the tonifying points. This site's decks have no combined Heart-Blood-deficiency-with-Liver-Qi-stagnation slide (confirmed absent since Yawning, batch 28), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

3. Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations, insomnia with excessive dreaming, poor appetite/bloating, mental and physical fatigue, pale complexion, easy weeping.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially at the left Cun and right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and nourish Blood to strengthen the Spleen's production capacity.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Linked to this site's Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide via its own palpitations/poor-appetite symptom set, the same match used for Delayed Speech Development, Hallucinations, Apathy and Mood Swings.

4. Stagnant Liver-Qi Turning Into Fire View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability and angry outbursts, bitter taste, throbbing/distending headache, red eyes, rib-side pain.
Tongue: Red body especially the sides, yellow dry coating with possible prickles. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Soothe stagnation while clearing Heat and draining Fire.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide, the same paraphrase-link convention used throughout this site.

5. Qi-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Lump sensation in the throat (Plum Pit Qi), chest/upper abdominal oppression, worsening with emotional stress, sighing, nausea.
Tongue: Normal colour, possibly swollen, white greasy/slippery coating. Pulse: Wiry and slippery.
Treatment principle: Move Qi and dissipate nodules while resolving Phlegm obstruction.
Note: no moxa. This site has no organ-nonspecific Phlegm slide and no Liver-Qi-stagnation-with-Phlegm combination slide (same gap noted for Thyroid Nodules, Neck Lumps and Acid Reflux), so no pattern link is given — points still link fine individually.

6. Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Low-grade persistent sadness with mental restlessness, night sweats and five-center heat, palpitations with vivid dreams, low back soreness/dizziness/tinnitus, dry mouth/throat.
Tongue: Red, especially the tip, thin body, scanty/absent coating, dry surface with possible cracks. Pulse: Thin and rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin and Blood to replenish depleted cooling Essence.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct match with this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide — this pattern's own Yin-deficiency-type presentation (five-center heat, night sweats) confirms the correct side of the established distinction.
