Short Periods

How Chinese medicine differentiates short periods — a cycle consistently arriving earlier than 21 days apart — into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Delayed Menstruation page (the opposite timing pattern). Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A cycle persistently shorter than 21 days should be evaluated to rule out hormonal or structural causes before assuming a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for short periods — 10 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Five Patterns

1. Spleen Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Cycle shorter than 21 days, pale/thin/watery menstrual blood, heavy flow or prolonged spotting, fatigue and lack of energy, poor appetite with bloating after meals, loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with tooth marks and thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, soft, especially feeble at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Raise Spleen Qi to hold Blood in the vessels and restore a normal cycle.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability and explosive anger, distending pain in the ribcage or breasts, bitter taste and dry throat, dark or purple-red menstrual blood with clots, periods come early, often triggered by stress.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, especially at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Soothe the Liver, clear Heat, regulate menstruation.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

3. Heat in the Blood

Clinical manifestations: Heavy menstrual flow arriving early, bright or dark red thick sticky blood, feeling of body heat worse at night, restlessness and irritability, thirst for cool drinks, flushed red face.
Tongue: Red body with red spots or prickles, thin yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, wiry, forceful.
Treatment principle: Clear excess Heat from the Blood level, cool the Blood, drain Kidney fire.
Note: no moxa. This site has no standalone Heat-in-the-Blood slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Scanty bright-red menstrual flow, night sweats, hot palms and soles, dry throat at night, lower back soreness, malar flush.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating, possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak at the rear position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin and clear Empty-Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

5. Kidney Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Periods arrive early (cycle shorter than 21 days), pale and thin menstrual blood, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees, dizziness or tinnitus, frequent urination especially at night.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy body with possible tooth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Deep and weak, especially at the rear positions.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Kidney Qi and anchor the uterus through the Chong and Ren vessels.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site's Kidney deck only has a "Kidney-Qi not Firm" slide, which is framed around incontinence/prolapse rather than this plain deficiency picture — a gap confirmed on several other pages — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
