1. Spleen Deficiency with Dampness
Clinical manifestations: Loose, unformed stools or diarrhoea, abdominal bloating worse after eating, a feeling of heaviness in the body and limbs, poor appetite and a bland taste, a sticky or greasy mouth sensation, drowsiness especially after meals.
Tongue: Pale, swollen with clear teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slowed, soft and lacking force, especially at the right Guan.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen's fluid management so unprocessed water stops accumulating and swelling the tongue against the teeth.

Clinical manifestations: Deep, obvious teeth marks, a cold feeling with cold hands and feet especially below the knees, a sore cold lower back and knees, early-morning diarrhoea with undigested food, frequent clear urination, extreme fatigue.
Tongue: Pale, swollen, puffy with deep teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow, both Chi positions especially feeble.
Treatment principle: Warm and tonify Kidney- and Spleen-Yang so the body's fire stops the fluids stagnating like a waterlogged sponge.
Clinical manifestations: Fine, shallow teeth marks along the edges, rib-side distension or tightness, frequent sighing, irritability or a short temper, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, breast tenderness or swelling.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark, red or slightly purple sides, thin white coat, fine teeth marks may be present. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Smooth the Liver's Qi flow so the muscular tension pressing the tongue against the teeth releases.
