Waking Between 1-3 AM

How Chinese medicine differentiates waking between 1 and 3am — the Liver's peak hours on the organ clock — into the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Early Awakening page. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Persistent middle-of-the-night waking deserves its own sleep assessment alongside any pattern-based approach.

1. Liver Qi Stagnation That Transforms Into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Irritability and anger, bitter taste in the mouth, distending pain or discomfort in the ribcage, vivid or disturbing dreams, red face and eyes, dark yellow urine, frequent sighing.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Smooths Liver-Qi, clears Heat, and calms the spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

2. Liver Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Waking between 1 and 3am with difficulty falling back asleep, vivid or disturbing dreams, dizziness, dry eyes, blurred vision, or poor night vision, pale or sallow complexion, brittle, dry, or ridged nails, numbness or tingling in the limbs.
Tongue: Pale body (especially the sides), thin and slightly dry with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and choppy, possibly wiry at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Blood to anchor the ethereal soul during the Liver's peak hours.
Note: moxa applicable on REN-6. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Blood-deficiency slide.

3. Liver-Yang Rising View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Throbbing or distending headache at the temples, irritability and anger, feeling of heat rising to the face and head, dizziness, sudden waking between 1 and 3am.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, thin dry yellow or scanty coat. Pulse: Wiry, especially forceful at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Subdue rising Liver-Yang, clear Heat, and calm the spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Yang-rising slide.

4. Liver Qi Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Waking with fatigue rather than anger, dull ache or heaviness along the ribs, frequent sighing, timidity, anxiety, or easily startled.
Tongue: Pale, slightly puffy body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Weak, thin and wiry at the left Guan position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Liver-Qi to securely house the ethereal soul during sleep.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site's Liver deck has no plain Liver-Qi-deficiency slide (an unusual, less-often-discussed TCM pattern distinct from Liver-Blood deficiency) — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Heart and Spleen Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations or heartbeat awareness, poor appetite with bloating, fatigue and lack of energy, pale or sallow complexion, timidity, anxiety, or easily startled.
Tongue: Pale, tender body with teeth marks and thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, and possibly choppy, especially weak at the left Cun (Heart) and right Guan (Spleen) positions.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen to generate Blood, nourish the Heart to calm the spirit and anchor the soul.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36/BL-20. Linked to this site's own Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide, the closest match, with the source's mixed Qi-and-Blood framing flagged against that slide's pure-Blood framing.
