Early Awakening

How Chinese medicine differentiates early awakening — distinct from general Insomnia already covered, where the pattern falling asleep is fine but waking too early is the problem — the five patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Early waking alongside low mood, loss of interest in life, or appetite/weight changes needs a mental health evaluation before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Five Patterns

1. Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Waking early feeling unrefreshed and tired, poor appetite with bloating after meals, pale or sallow complexion, palpitations with forgetfulness and overthinking, loose stools.
Tongue: Pale, puffy body with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, empty at left Cun, soft at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Strengthen the Spleen to produce Blood and nourish the Heart's spirit anchor.
Note: moxa applicable. This site's Spleen- and Heart-Blood deficiency slide is the closest match — poor appetite and loose stools are named there.

2. Heart and Kidney Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Night sweats, heart palpitations or racing heart upon waking, five-center heat, dry mouth and throat especially at night, low back soreness or weakness.
Tongue: Red tongue, especially at the tip, thin body, little or no coating, dry surface with possible cracks. Pulse: Fine and rapid, weak at the left Kidney position.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin to cool and anchor the Heart, clearing Empty Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidneys-and-Heart-not-harmonized slide — night sweats, heat sensations and dry throat are the same Yin-deficiency markers named there (that slide is the Yin-deficiency/Empty-Heat version, not the Yang-deficiency-named pattern of similar title declined elsewhere on this site).

3. Liver Qi Stagnation that Transforms into Heat View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Waking early, often between 1–3 a.m., bitter taste in the mouth, irritability and explosive anger, distending pain in the ribcage, red face and eyes.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides and yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid.
Treatment principle: Soothe Liver Qi, clear rising Heat, calm the spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Stagnant-Liver-Qi-turning-into-Heat slide.

4. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Chest oppression and fullness, copious thick yellow sticky phlegm, mental restlessness and agitation, bitter taste and thirst, flushed red face.
Tongue: Red body, swollen with a red prickly tip, thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, forceful at left Cun.
Treatment principle: Clear Heat, dissolve Phlegm, calm the spirit.
Note: no moxa. Direct name match with this site's own Phlegm-Fire-harassing-the-Heart slide.

5. Heart Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Severe mental restlessness and agitation on waking, palpitations or racing heartbeat, bitter taste especially after poor sleep, intense thirst for cold drinks, red flushed face.
Tongue: Red body with distinctly redder tip, swollen red points on the tip, yellow dry coating. Pulse: Rapid, forceful, and overflowing, strongest at left front.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Heart Fire and clear heat to allow the spirit to settle.
Note: no moxa. Direct match — mouth and tongue ulcers/red tip are the same markers named on this site's Heart-Fire-blazing slide.
