Frequent Night Waking

How Chinese medicine differentiates frequent night waking — distinct from Early Awakening's single early-morning wake and general Insomnia already covered — the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Waking gasping for air, loud snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, or waking with chest pain needs medical evaluation to rule out sleep apnea or a cardiac cause before assuming it is a simple pattern.

1. Heart and Spleen Qi and Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Light sleep with frequent waking and vivid dreaming, daytime fatigue and mental fog, poor appetite with bloating and loose stools, palpitations, pale complexion and lips.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, slightly tender with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, empty at left Cun, soft at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen, anchor the Shen.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site's Spleen- and Heart-Blood deficiency slide is the closest match.

2. Gallbladder Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Easily startled awake by small noises or movements, vivid, often frightening dreams, timidity and indecisiveness during the day, heart palpitations upon waking.
Tongue: Pale, thin body with thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, often wiry, especially weak at left middle.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Gallbladder Qi, anchor the Shen, reduce the startle response.
Note: moxa applicable on tonifying points. Direct name match with this site's own Gall-Bladder-deficient slide, first used for Cardiac Arrhythmia.

3. Liver Fire Invading the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Vivid, disturbing dreams causing abrupt waking, intense irritability or anger outbursts, bitter taste in mouth, red face, red eyes, or temple headaches, dark yellow urine.
Tongue: Red body, redder at sides and tip, dry yellow coating. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, especially strong at left middle.
Treatment principle: Drain excess Fire from Liver and Gallbladder, clear Heart heat.
Note: no moxa. Matched to this site's Liver-Fire-blazing slide — irritability, red eyes, bitter taste and dark urine are the same markers named there, even though that slide isn't specifically Heart-invasion-framed.
