Age Spots

How Chinese medicine differentiates age spots — flat brown marks on sun-exposed skin, never just a surface problem — into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. A spot that changes shape, color, or size, bleeds, or looks different from the others needs prompt dermatological evaluation to rule out a skin cancer before assuming it is a simple age spot.
General Acupuncture Points

2. Kidney Yin Deficiency With Empty-Heat Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Deep brown spots on the face and hands with thin dry skin, night sweats and afternoon/evening heat, hot palms and soles with lower back soreness, restlessness and irritability, tinnitus or diminished hearing.
Tongue: Red, thin, dry with little or no coating, possibly cracked. Pulse: Fine, rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourish Kidney Yin while clearing deficiency Heat.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Kidney-Yin-deficiency-Empty-Heat-blazing slide.

3. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark purplish or brown spots with a fixed stubborn quality, dark or dusky facial complexion, dark circles under the eyes, fixed stabbing pain elsewhere, dark menstrual blood with clots (women).
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins. Pulse: Choppy or wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood and dispel stasis through warmth and movement.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide.

4. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dark purplish spots on the face and hands, chest tightness or distending pain in the ribs, irritability or mood swings, dark lips or purplish complexion, emotional stress as a clear trigger.
Tongue: Purple or dark body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins. Pulse: Wiry and choppy.
Treatment principle: Relieve constraint and restore smooth circulation.
Note: no moxa. Also linked to this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide — the second and last use of that slide on this page, within the established two-per-page cap.

5. Qi and Blood Deficiency

Clinical manifestations: Light-brown spots (not dark or purple), pale or sallow complexion, persistent fatigue and weakness, dizziness or lightheadedness.
Tongue: Pale body, possibly thin with teeth marks, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, especially the right Guan position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi and Blood to restore skin nourishment.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. This site has no combined Qi-and-Blood-deficiency slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

6. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Thick, raised spots with a greasy sheen, heavy sensation in the limbs and body, sticky or loose stools, brain fog or a sensation of the head being wrapped.
Tongue: Pale, swollen body with teeth marks, thick white greasy coating, wet surface. Pulse: Slippery like beads rolling in oil, possibly soggy in the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dry Dampness, transform Phlegm, strengthen Spleen function.
Note: no moxa. This site has no plain excess Damp-Phlegm slide distinct from the Liver-Qi-stagnation-combined Spleen slide, the same gap confirmed on several pages this project — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.
