Alcoholic Liver Disease

How Chinese medicine differentiates alcoholic liver disease into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Fatty Liver and Cirrhosis pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Jaundice, confusion, vomiting blood, or abdominal swelling needs urgent medical evaluation — acupuncture here is supportive of the underlying pattern, never a substitute for that care, and stopping alcohol use is the single most important step regardless of pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for alcoholic liver disease (supportive, alongside medical care) — 13 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Damp-Heat in the Liver View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Rib pain and distension, bitter taste, dark yellow or reddish urine, nausea, poor appetite, aversion to greasy foods, heaviness sensation.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Wiry, slippery, rapid.
Treatment principle: Drains excess Fire from the Liver and Gallbladder, clears Damp-Heat from the Lower Burner.
Note: no moxa. This is a hypochondrium/rib-pain presentation rather than a genital one, so it is linked to this site's own Damp-Heat-in-the-Gall-Bladder-and-Liver slide — the same match already established on this site's Cholecystitis, Biliary Colic, and Cholangitis pages — rather than the Liver deck's genital-specific Damp-Heat slide.

2. Liver Qi Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Rib distension and bloating, frequent sighing, irritability, chest tightness, moving ache worsened by stress and emotion.
Tongue: Normal or slightly dark body, red or purple sides, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry, taut like a guitar string.
Treatment principle: Smooths Liver-Qi flow, relieves constraint and pain, moves stagnant energy.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Qi-stagnation slide.

3. Spleen Deficiency With Dampness

Clinical manifestations: Loose or unformed stools, abdominal bloating worse after eating, body heaviness, poor appetite with reduced taste, sticky greasy mouth sensation, fatigue especially post-meals.
Tongue: Pale swollen body with teeth marks, white greasy coating, moist surface. Pulse: Soggy and slow, soft, lacking force.
Treatment principle: Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen, drains Dampness.
Note: moxa applicable on ST-36. This site has no combined Spleen-deficiency-with-Dampness slide, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

4. Damp-Phlegm

Clinical manifestations: Heavy sensation in the right upper abdomen, chest and upper abdominal stuffiness, copious white or clear phlegm, bland taste without thirst, loose sticky stools, fatigue with drowsiness and brain fog.
Tongue: Pale swollen body with scalloped teeth marks, thick white greasy coat, wet surface. Pulse: Slippery like a bead rolling in oil, often soggy at the right middle position.
Treatment principle: Dries Dampness and transforms Phlegm, regulates Qi and harmonizes the Middle Burner.
Note: no moxa. This site has no plain Damp-Phlegm slide on any deck, a gap confirmed absent many times over this session — no pattern link is given here; points still link fine individually.

5. Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain in the right upper abdomen, pain worsens at night, dark or dusky facial complexion, palpable firm liver mass, dark purplish lips and nails.
Tongue: Purple or dusky body with stasis spots, distended dark sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, may be wiry.
Treatment principle: Invigorates Blood and dispels stasis, moves Qi and alleviates pain, disperses accumulations and dissipates nodules.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with this site's own Liver-Blood-stasis slide via the established discoloration-marker rule — a palpable firm liver mass here is itself a warning sign needing medical evaluation.

6. Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Dull burning ache below the ribs, dry eyes and mouth, night sweats, five-center heat, dizziness, light-headedness, develops after years of heavy drinking.
Tongue: Red thin body with red sides, dry surface, little or no coating. Pulse: Wiry, fine, rapid.
Treatment principle: Nourishes Liver and Kidney Yin, soothes the Liver and regulates Qi, nourishes Blood and softens the Liver.
Note: no moxa. Direct exact-name match with this site's own Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.
