Cardiac Arrhythmia

How Chinese medicine differentiates cardiac arrhythmia, the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs, and only as supportive care alongside cardiology management.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. An irregular heartbeat always needs medical evaluation to rule out a dangerous arrhythmia before acupuncture is considered — this page is supportive care for a diagnosed, medically-managed condition, not a substitute for that management.
General Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points traditionally used for cardiac arrhythmia — 7 key points, used across the patterns below rather than tied to just one.

The Six Patterns

1. Heart Blood Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations that feel like a flutter or racing, worse when tired; a pale complexion; dizziness or light-headedness; poor memory and forgetfulness; difficulty falling asleep with vivid dreaming.
Tongue: Pale, possibly thin, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak, may be slightly choppy.
Treatment principle: Tonify Qi, nourish Blood, strengthen the Spleen to anchor the spirit.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. Direct match with Heart-Blood deficiency.

2. Gallbladder Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Easily startled by small noises or movements; timidity and indecisiveness; palpitations triggered by fright or nervousness; restless sleep with vivid or frightening dreams.
Tongue: Pale, thin body, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine, weak, often wiry, especially weak at the left middle position.
Treatment principle: Strengthen Gallbladder-Qi to restore courage and anchor the Heart spirit.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. Direct match with Gall Bladder deficient — timidity, being easily startled and restless dreams are shared.

3. Heart Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations worse at rest or at night; mental restlessness and agitation; night sweats; five-palm heat; a dry mouth and throat.
Tongue: Red body (especially the tip) with little or no coating, may have a midline crack, dry surface. Pulse: Fine and rapid, often empty at the deep level.
Treatment principle: Nourish Heart-Yin to cool Empty-Heat and anchor the restless Mind.
Note: no moxa (Yin deficiency). Direct match with Heart-Yin deficiency.

4. Heart Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Palpitations worse with exertion; shortness of breath and fatigue; a pale complexion; spontaneous daytime sweating.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, thin white coat, midline crack toward the tip in chronic cases. Pulse: Empty, weak, or fine, especially weak at the left Cun position.
Treatment principle: Tonify Heart-Qi to restore pumping strength and stabilize the rhythm.
Note: moxa applicable on the Tonify points. Direct match with Heart-Qi deficiency.

5. Heart Yang Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Feeling cold, especially in the hands and feet; a bright pale, slightly puffy face; chest oppression and shortness of breath; palpitations worsening with exertion; fatigue and mental listlessness.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, tender with teeth marks, white slippery coating. Pulse: Deep, weak, slow, with possible irregular pauses.
Treatment principle: Restore Heart-Yang fire to warm circulation and strengthen the Heart's propelling force.
Note: moxa applicable. Direct match with Heart-Yang deficiency.

6. Heart Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Stabbing or pricking chest pain in a fixed location; purple or dark lips and nails; palpitations with chest tightness; feeling cold, especially in the hands and feet.
Tongue: Purple or dark-red body with stasis spots, distended sublingual veins, thin white coat. Pulse: Choppy, or knotted with irregular pauses.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, eliminate stasis, unblock the Heart vessels.
Note: no moxa. Direct match with Heart-Blood stasis — purple/dark lips and nails are the same discoloration marker named there.
