Dream-Disturbed Sleep

How Chinese medicine differentiates sleep that's broken up by excessive or vivid dreaming into the six patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Distinct from this site's own Insomnia and Nightmares pages. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. This is one diagnostic sign among many — always weigh it alongside the tongue, pulse, symptoms, and history.

Clinical manifestations: Frequent, easily-waking dreams, poor appetite and bloating after meals, mental and physical fatigue, pale, sallow complexion, palpitations or fluttering in the chest, forgetfulness and poor concentration.
Tongue: Pale, puffy, and slightly tender with teeth marks along the edges, thin white coating. Pulse: Fine and weak overall, especially empty at the left Cun (Heart) position and soft at the right Guan (Spleen) position.
Treatment principle: Strengthens Spleen-Qi and nourishes Heart-Blood to anchor the spirit.
Note: moxa applicable. Linked to this site's own Spleen-and-Heart-Blood-deficiency slide — the source names a combined Qi-and-Blood deficiency while the deck slide is pure-Blood-framed, a framing gap flagged consistent with this session's earlier Heart-and-Spleen pages.

2. Liver Fire Blazing View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Vivid or frightening dreams with anger themes, irritability and short temper, bitter taste in the mouth, throbbing headache at the temples, red, painful or burning eyes.
Tongue: Red body with redder sides, dry yellow coating, possible red prickles. Pulse: Wiry and rapid, full and forceful especially at the left Guan (Liver) position.
Treatment principle: Clears Liver-Fire and drains Heat to settle the rising Fire disturbing the Heart-Shen.

3. Phlegm-Fire Harassing the Heart View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Chest oppression with thick yellow sticky phlegm, flushed red face and red eyes, bitter taste in the mouth and thirst, dizziness and head heaviness, rattling or gurgling sound in the throat.
Tongue: Red body, swollen with a red prickly tip, covered by a thick yellow greasy coating. Pulse: Slippery and rapid, especially full and overflowing at the left Cun (Heart) position.
Treatment principle: Clears Heat and transforms Phlegm to calm the Heart and settle the Mind.
