Drop Foot

How Chinese medicine differentiates drop foot — distinct from Common Peroneal Neuropathy already covered — the four patterns you'll actually meet in practice, and the points for each. Acupuncture only — no herbs.

This page is educational, for practitioners and students — it is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a proper in-person assessment. Sudden drop foot needs prompt medical evaluation to find the cause before assuming it is a simple pattern.
General Acupuncture Points

The Four Patterns

1. Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Lower back and knee soreness and weakness, dizziness, ringing in the ears, night sweats, heat in the palms soles and chest, dry eyes and blurred vision, foot feels limp and weak with gradual onset.
Tongue: Red, thin body with cracks, little or no coating, dry surface. Pulse: Fine, rapid, wiry, weak at left Chi and Guan.
Treatment principle: Nourish Yin, clear deficiency Heat, and strengthen the sinews and bones to restore foot lift.
Note: no moxa given the Yin deficiency. Direct match, reusing the well-established Kidney-and-Liver-Yin-deficiency slide.

2. Spleen and Stomach Qi Deficiency View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Weakness and heaviness in all limbs, poor appetite, bloating after meals, loose unformed stools, fatigue worsening with exertion, sallow pale complexion, whole body feels tired.
Tongue: Pale, puffy with tooth marks and thin white coating. Pulse: Weak and soft, especially empty at right Guan.
Treatment principle: Raise Spleen-Qi to nourish the muscles and restore strength to the limbs, helping lift the foot.
Note: moxa applicable throughout. Direct match with this site's own Stomach-and-Spleen-Qi-deficiency slide.

3. Qi and Blood Stagnation View full pattern →

Clinical manifestations: Fixed stabbing pain in the foot and ankle, pain worsens with pressure or touch, dark purple or bruised discoloration, numbness or tingling in the foot, onset abrupt following injury surgery or prolonged immobility.
Tongue: Dark purple body with stasis spots, thin white coat. Pulse: Wiry and choppy, or deep and choppy.
Treatment principle: Invigorate Blood, dispel stasis, and unblock the channels to relieve pain and restore foot movement.
Note: no moxa. Matches this site's Liver-Blood stasis slide — a dark purple tongue with stasis spots is the same discoloration marker named there.

4. Damp-Heat

Clinical manifestations: Heaviness and swelling in the foot and lower leg, sticky greasy mouth sensation, symptoms worse in humid weather, loose sticky stools, local warmth or redness of the foot, foot feels heavy as if dragging through mud.
Tongue: Red body with thick greasy yellow coating, may be swollen with teeth marks. Pulse: Soggy-rapid or slippery-rapid.
Treatment principle: Clear Damp-Heat from the lower limbs, reduce swelling and heaviness, and help restore foot movement.
Note: no moxa. This pattern is generic limb Damp-Heat without a genital or Lower-Burner marker, and no deck on this site has an organ-nonspecific Damp-Heat slide, so no pattern link is given here.
